Saving styles, filters and connection files in Windows Vista
These instructions are for users of the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system who need to download EndNote filters, styles or connection files. Vista will not allow the user to save files to the Program Files area. This is the area where the EndNote Filters, Styles and Connections folders normally reside.
If you want to download additional Styles, you must find the EndNote Styles folder in the Program Files, copy that folder, and paste it into the Documents area of your computer. Then you can download the additional filters and save them in the new folder. Then amend the preferences in EndNote so that it is aware of this change:
- open EndNote
- select Edit > Preferences
- select Folder Locations - the default Style Folder location will be in the Program Files folder
- click on Select Folder and browse to locate the new folder that you have created in the Documents area, and Select that folder
- click on Okay
The same procedure applies if you want to download extra filters or connection files.
Using EndNote X4 in Windows Vista: 'Invalid Class String' error
EndNote X4 is compatible with Windows Vista, but should be installed by a user who has administrative rights for that computer.
If Endnote is not installed by the administrator, Microsoft Word and Endnote will not communicate properly resulting in an 'Invalid Class String' error message when trying to insert a reference into a Word document with the EndNote cite-while-you-write (CWYW) function.
To fix this problem:
- log-in to the computer as the administrator to install and configure EndNote (uninstall EndNote if required)
- right-click on the EndNote program icon
- select Properties
- give 'all users' read/write access for EndNote X4

Endnote and Office 2010 (Win)
Office 2010 is only compatible with Endnote X4. Earlier versions of Endnote are not compatible with Office 2010 and Thomson Reuters do not plan to provide upgrades to earlier versions of EndNote.

Endnote X4 and Office 2011 (Mac)
Office 2011 is not compatible with X4. However, Thomson Reuters is developing a compatibility patch for EndNote X4 and Office 2011 (Mac). This is a temporary beta patch available from Thomson Reuters.
