The Library has created an EndNote connection file that can be used to search the CSU Library Catalogue from within EndNote; the latest version of which can be downloaded and saved to your computer. This connection file should already be available with the software installed on CSU computers, but will need to be downloaded as a plugin if you have installed EndNote on your own computer.
- Open your EndNote library
- Select Tools, then Online Search, and New Search to display the list of connection files available in the EndNote../Connections folder
- Highlight Charles Sturt University and click Choose
- The selected records should be transferred directly to your current library. If not, use the Look in: dropdown menu to find and click on your library file.
The references will by default be transferred directly to your currently open EndNote library.
To enter a new reference in an open library:
- Select the References menu
- Click New Reference or press CTRL + N
- Choose a reference type from the Reference Type dropdown list
- Enter the information required to describe the journal article, book, book section... into the required fields in the Reference window. When you are finished, close the reference to save it and add the record to your library.
The default Reference Type is that for a Journal Article. If you are frequently entering books or other reference types you may wish to change this default setting, as follows:
- Close and open records
- Select the Edit menu
- Click Preferences
- Click Reference Types
- Select a new default Reference Type from the dropdown menu
- Click OK
Authors
Personal Authors
Entries with more than one author or editor should be entered one name per line.
It is best to enter names in the following order:
<Family name><comma><First name><space><middle name>
e.g. Hannan, Katie L
EndNote Output Styles can abbreviate first and middle names, so for maximum flexibility enter whole names whenever possible.
If a reference has no author, you should leave the Author field blank. Do not enter 'Anonymous.' The style that you use to format the bibliography will determine how anonymous references are treated.
Corporate Authors
When entering corporate authors, put a comma after the name:
NSW Department of Agriculture,
If the name of the corporate author normally includes a comma, insert two commas at the point in the text:
Australia,, Department of Primary Industries
Attach files to Record in your EndNote Library
Each EndNote record includes a file attachments field. When a file is entered into this field, EndNote makes a copy of it and saves it in the .DATA folder that is linked to your EndNote library.
If you are attaching a journal article from a database, you will first need to temporarily save a copy of the article to your computer first.
After you have attached the file to the EndNote record, you can delete it from your computer.
- Select the required record in the Library window
- Select the References menu
- Select File Attachment
- Select Attach File
- Locate and select the file to be attached
- Click Open
Records with attached files are identified in the Library Window with a [insert image here]
Open Attached Files Stored with your EndNote Library
- Select the record in the Library menu
- Select the References menu
- Select File Attachments
- Select Open file
Add URLs
The URL field in an EndNote record may be used to link directly to the location of the original document, ie. web page, online journal articles.
Subject Coordinators who embed links to resources in online subject material, for use by students, may also wish to store persistent URLs with the corresponding EndNote record.
These links can be created to take a student directly to:
- Selected full test articles found in Library databases
- Online journals
- eBooks (electronic books)
- Documents available via the Library eReserve collection
For detailed step-by-step instructions for creating links to these Library resources, see the Create Links to Resources page.
These links can be communicated to students via email, CSU forums, web pages, or in CSU Interact. Authentication is required to access content from Library databases, and journals or articles can only be accessed by current CSU staff and students.
