Electronic Publication and the Narrowing of Science and Scholarship 22/07/2008
Evans, J. A. (2008). Electronic Publication and the Narrowing of Science and Scholarship. Science, 321(5887), 395-399. doi:10.1126/science.1150473
‘Online journals promise to serve more information to more dispersed audiences and are more efficiently searched and recalled. But because they are used differently than print scientists and scholars tend to search electronically and follow hyperlinks rather than browse or peruse electronically available journals may portend an ironic change for science. … Searching online is more efficient and following hyperlinks quickly puts researchers in touch with prevailing opinion, but this may accelerate consensus and narrow the range of findings and ideas built upon.’
Access to this article in the journal Science is via an ongoing CSU Library electronic journal trial.

Research policy experts believe the federal Government's proposal to measure academic research performance will result in unofficial university rankings, despite the exercise being designed to prevent this occurring. But research commentators are also closing ranks in support of the ERA in the face of intense criticism from disgruntled academics. While successful universities use rankings for marketing, academics slate most of them as subjective and even dangerous.

Specialised services
Library faculty liaison service
Faculty liaison librarians are based at the Albury-Wodonga, Bathurst, Orange and Wagga Campuses to support academic staff, researchers and postgraduate students at all campuses, facilitate communication between the Library and faculty, and help match library services and resources to academic requirements.
Individual one-on-one training in the use of library resources can be requested via Book-a-librarian. For more information see the Training & development program.
Examples:
- Basic and advanced database training; learn how to set up email and RSS alerts for selected journals
- ERA support
- Use of EndNote to manage references, and associated PDF copies of articles; and produce reference lists in a range of standard and custom styles (eg. APA, MLA, Chicago ...)
- Creation of links to online electronic resources for use in online subjects (Interact)
- Assistance locating resources for teaching
Faculty liaison librarians can be contacted directly, or via the Library Ask a Question service.
Book a Librarian
Researchers can use the Book a Librarian form to book a one-on-one consultation with a librarian to develop their research information skills. The five modules, offering a range of competencies, can be selected individually or in any combination.
For more information see the Training & development program for academic staff and postgraduate students.
