Information Literacy @ CSU - For Staff
Information literacy is crucial for learning at university and success in professional life. Through its Operational Plan 2007-2011, the CSU Division of Library Services is committed to supporting the achievement of excellence in education for the professions through the provision of quality information literacy education in collaboration with course coordinators and CELT educational designers.
Information literacy training at CSU is available through a mix of self-directed instruction for independent learning that can be integrated into the online learning environment and embedded into the curriculum. The Division of Library Services does not deliver face-to-face information literacy training. Support for Higher Degree Research students and researchers is available via Book-a-Librarian.
According to Bruce (2002) the critical elements of learning to be information literate are:
- Experiencing information literacy (learning)
- Reflection on experience (being aware of learning)
- Application of experience to novel contexts (transfer of learning)
The most effective way of providing these is through the delivery of learning activities that require the use of information skills integrated into course material.
Information & Liaison librarians are available on each campus to work with course coordinators to advise and develop tailored experiential online information and research skills learning modules for all undergraduate and postgraduate levels. For further information, please contact the Information Literacy Coordinator.
Information Literacy Tutorials
Library Database Tutorial: a tailored learning resource to teach the skills required to develop a search strategy and conduct a literature search. The tutorial is undertaken in conjunction with a coursework essay or research assignment and is generally set as a compulsory exercise that contributes to the overall assessment of that assignment, thus lending it the authenticity required to motivate students to engage with it as a genuine learning activity (Dewald, 1999).
Information Literacy in Context (ILIC): a learning and teaching model for embedding core academic skills into first year subjects. It is generally undertaken as a four to six week program, and is assessable. It is developed as joint academic/library collaboration. For an example of how an ILIC program can be embedded into a subject in Interact, please contact the: Information Literacy Coordinator.
