Bio
Betsy works a half time position with the Business Faculty at Thurgoona and half with the Flexible Learning Institute. She has a background in Secondary Education, having studied Bachelor of Arts/Diploma Education at Latrobe University, majoring in History. She taught for several years in this subject, English and ESL. After taking a break from teaching to raise her family she returned to work and to study for her Bachelor of Education (Adult Literacy and Basic Education) and worked in the Community Education Centre in Wodonga as well as in the TAFE sector in NSW and Victoria.
Her particular area of interest was in adult learning, literacy, basic mathematics and workplace literacy. After tutoring in these, she became a coordinator of the adult literacy programs, organising literacy learning for adults, including special courses for people with learning difficulties as well as working with local indigenous groups to assist with their learning. Betsy applied for and was granted NCVER research funding to develop a program to take literacy on farms to people who needed this. She then managed and taught in the Workplace Learning Unit at the CEC, developing fee for service flexible learning in the areas of Training and Assessment and Frontline Management, both to Diploma level with the Defence force and local businesses. She began at CSU as support tutor for indigenous and overseas students and then has worked as a Research Assistant/Project Officer to Professor Mike Keppell of the Flexible Learning Unit assisting with the Teaching Fellowship and the DEHub projects.
Betsy is particularly interested in adult learning and in mobile learning and learning spaces and how these impact on each other.
