Bio
Stephen has been working as an educational designer at CSU and the proceeding institution Mitchell College of Advanced Education since 1987. In that time he has worked with academic staff in the production of integrated learning materials using a variety of pedagogical designs developed using all available educational media. The principal pedagogical design has been an eclectic approach based on Gagné's cognitive development, Rowntree's pragmatic approach to teaching through self-instruction, Ramsden's deep approaches to learning and teaching, and Laurillard's and Salmon's approaches to learning and teaching in the electronic environment of the internet. The principal media has been print with ancillary media of the time: audiotapes, slides, video, electronic conferencing and the internet.
Stephen has also worked on a number of consultancies on behalf of the University in Australia and overseas. In 1998 he was an educational designer in a consultancy for the development of an online course Media Skills. This course won the best online educational course in 1999 in two national awards: Telstra/Financial Review Australian Internet Awards; and AIMIA / IIA National Awards for Excellence through Information Technology. Stephen has been part of a team developing problem based learning (PBL) postgraduate courses at the University of Newcastle and a Masters of Psychology at CSU.
Stephen is currently working with staff in the School of Social Science and Liberal Studies and in the School of Teacher Education in the development of an online course for the NSW Department of School Education to be offered to teachers involved with TESOL and multiliteracy education. The multiliteracy project coincides with his research interest in exploring the literacies required for academic staff in developing learning material and for students in learning in the multimodal and interactive environment of the internet.
