Dr Jeanette Baird - Audit Director, AUQA
Dr Jeanette Baird has a background in higher education and public sector management. She joined AUQA in February 2005 after several years with the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing, and prior to that, the Australian National Audit Office. From 1993 to 1998 she was General Manager, Research and Graduate Studies, at Swinburne University of Technology and participated in the implementation of the University's quality management system. Previous employers include the University of Melbourne and the Melbourne Business School, the University of Tasmania and the Victorian Department of Human Services.
Jeanette has an MBA and in 2004 completed her PhD on discourses of governance among members of Australian university governing boards. Her research interests include critical discourse analysis, accountability and performance monitoring in public organisations.
In her leisure time, Jeanette enjoys going to the beach, opera, and planning various yet-to-be-written novels set in nineteenth century Australia.
Prof Jan Thomas - Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Murdoch University (Panel Chair)
Professor Jan Thomas was appointed to the position of Pro Vice Chancellor Academic at Murdoch University in February 2003.
Jan is the AVCC representative on the Joint Steering Group for Australian Universities Quality Forum 2003 and 2004.
Professor Thomas has considerable depth of experience drawing together practical and theoretical aspects of teaching and learning with academic research. Since 1994, Jan has been active in educational development internationally and has provided effective leadership, teaching support, curriculum development and innovation. Jan was instrumental in redesigning the curriculum for the Veterinary Course at Murdoch University, achieving international praise - the course has subsequently been used as a model for good practice nationally and internationally. Jan has steered the Veterinary Course at Murdoch University through numerous professional accreditations including the prestigious American Veterinary Medical Association accreditation a first for an Australian Veterinary Course.
National and international recognition of her expertise in educational research relating to teaching and learning in higher education include positions as Visiting Scholar at Chonnam National University, Kwang Ju, South Korea, and Trinity College Dublin.
Jan’s Teaching awards include:
- Murdoch University Vice Chancellor’s “Excellence in Teaching” Award 1996.
- Inaugural Australian Veterinary Association “Excellence in Teaching Award” 1997/1998.
- Inaugural “Catherine McAuley Award for Leadership” 1999, awarded for Jan’s influence on the teaching environment in the Higher Education sector.
- Vice-Chancellor’s “Equity Award” 2000 for providing appropriate learning environments for students with disabilities.
Prof Merv Hyde - Academic Advisor, University of the Sunshine Coast
Merv Hyde is Professor and Academic Adviser in Teaching and Research Services at the University of the Sunshine Coast and Adjunct Professor and Principal Research Fellow at Griffith University. He has been Head of the School of Education and Professional Studies in the Faculty of Education at the Gold Coast campus of Griffith University and Head of School of Justice Administration. He was also Vice-Chair or Chair of the Griffith University Academic Committee and Chair of the University Education Committee for seven years.
He has a strong background in areas of academic and student policy development and in many areas of staff policy and management. He is also experienced in the development and management of teaching and learning policies and practices in higher education. He has significant experience in the private higher education sector and has prepared evaluation reports on non-self accrediting institutions for two state Offices of Higher Education.
For over 30 years Professor Hyde has worked in South East Asian nations as an agent of the AVCC, AusAID or DEETYA, as a consultant to inter-governmental groups, and in program development, policy development and staff development. He was appointed in 2000 by the World Bank as a Technical Consultant on undergraduate education at the University of Indonesia. In 1994 Professor Hyde was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) by the Governor General for his contributions to education in Australia and Indonesia.
Mr Geoffrey Hines - Executive Chairman, Hines Management Consultants
Geoff Hines is a leading executive search and selection consultant based in Queensland. His firm was a founding partner of the Australasian network, Consulting Partners Australasia, and carries out executive search and selection assignments for a wide range of private and public sector organisations, including Universities. Prior to moving into this field in 1983, he had an extensive senior executive career in human resources management, initially in the U.K. with Mars Ltd and later in Australia as Personnel Director of Uncle Ben’s of Australia and General Manager, Employee and Public Affairs with MIM Holdings Ltd.
He has a Master of Arts in Chemistry and a Diploma in Education from Trinity College, Oxford and is an Alumnus of the London Business School. At Oxford, he gained two Blues for rugby football and was an England trialist. He also played rugby for Rhodesia in the Currie Cup whilst teaching at an African secondary school in Northern Rhodesia, now Zambia.
Geoff is a Fellow of the Institute of Company Directors, a Life Fellow and Past President of the Australian Institute of Management, a Fellow of the Australian Human Resources Institute, and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (UK). In 2007 he was appointed Chairman of the Brisbane Boys School Council. In the past, he has served on the Councils of the Brisbane College of Advanced Education and the Queensland Conservatorium of Music.
He is very active in the field of the performing arts and has a strong interest in the management of artistic enterprises. He sings bass in the Sanctuary and Concert Choirs of Saint Andrew’s on Creek Uniting Church and is Deputy Chairman of the Church Council. Previously, he has served as Chairman of the Lyric Opera of Queensland and President of the Brisbane Arts Theatre.
Dr Stephen Marshall - Acting Director, University Teaching Development Centre, Victoria University of Wellington
Dr Stephen Marshall is Acting Director and Senior Lecturer in Educational Technology at the Victoria University of Wellington University Teaching Development Centre. As well as responsibility for managing academic professional development in learning and teaching,
he is also responsible for managing the formal student feedback process at Victoria.
Stephen is a member of the New Zealand Ministry of Education Tertiary
E-Learning Reference Group, Chair of the E-Learning Directors of the
New Zealand Universities Group and an executive member of the
Australasian Council on Open and Distance Education. He is an auditor
for the New Zealand Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics Quality
organisation and also a member of the funding panel for the Ministry
of Education Tertiary E-Learning Research Fund.
Stephen researches in the areas of e-learning benchmarking,
plagiarism and academic integrity, intellectual property and the development of policy and strategy to support and encourage the effective use of technology. His e-learning maturity model (eMM) work has been adopted internationally and is used to guide e-learning
improvement initiatives in New Zealand, Australia, the UK and the USA.
