Preparation and Lodgement of Appeals Against Exclusion

Your appeal must be lodged using the approved Grounds for Appeal Pro Forma. Appeals submitted in any other format shall be rejected. Please note that it is your responsibility to ensure that your appeal is lodged on time, not the responsibility of a third party. All relevant supporting documentation should be submitted with the appeal. For information pertaining to the preparation and lodgement of your appeal, please refer to the following documentation:

  1. Academic Progress Regulations:
    • clause 6.1 for Grounds for Appeal to the Faculty Exclusion Appeals Committee;
    • clause 6.2 for Documentation of Appeal; and
  2. Procedures for Deciding Appeals Submitted in Accordance with the Academic Progress Regulations:
    • clause 1.3 for Additional Appeal Documentation.

Guidelines for supporting documentary evidence can be found under clause 5 of the Special Consideration Regulations. Any additional relevant documentation to support your case should be attached to your statement.

In order to meet the deadline for lodging your appeal your exclusion appeal may be faxed to (02) 6338 4194 or sent by email to exclusion_appeals@csu.edu.au. Emailed documents must be submitted as an attachment to an email message using a word processing package which is compatible with Microsoft Word. If you fax or email your appeal you must mail the original signed copies of your appeal documentation including the original signed copies of supporting documents to reach the University no later than 10 days after the expiration of the appeal period.

Assistance with the Preparation of Your Appeal

Assistance with the preparation of your appeal is available from the Division of Student Services. Student Support Officers will be available to discuss your case and assist you to develop a strategy of appeal and provide advice on the preparation of appeal documentation. Interviews with the Faculty Exclusion Appeals Committee

You have the right to be interviewed by the Faculty Exclusion Appeals Committee. Please refer to clause 1.4 of the Procedures for Deciding Appeals Submitted in Accordance with the Academic Progress Regulations for details. Please note that the Presiding Officer of the Faculty Exclusion Appeals Committee has the authority to deny a request for interview if sufficient supporting documentation has not been supplied. Dates and times for interviews are set by the University and shall not be negotiable, with the exception of extenuating circumstance which must be substantiated.

Liability

If your appeal is unsuccessful and you are excluded, the University will cancel your Commonwealth Student Contribution liability and refund any course and student fees that you incur during the appeal process. However, you will be liable for any other expenses incurred in proceeding with your enrolment (eg purchasing textbooks or costs for accommodation and meals in the residences).

Review of Grade

If you intend to request a review of your grade you must refer to Assessment Regulation 13 of the Assessment Regulations: Coursework Subjects. The application for a review of grade must be made in writing to the Student Administration Office within 28 days of the notification of the grade. Applications are decided by the Faculty Assessment Committee on the recommendation of the School Assessment Committee.

An application for a review of grade must be completed separately to your appeal. You must however proceed with your appeal in the event that your review of grade is unsuccessful. Please indicate in your appeal to the Faculty Exclusion Appeals Committee if you intend to submit an application.

Leave of Absence

Please note that exclusion will take precedence over leave of absence.

Enrolment

If you have appealed within the required time, you may remain as an enrolled student in your course until the appeal is decided. If you have failed a key subject for the second time, please refer to clause 3.5.2.1 of the Academic Progress Regulations for conditions in relation to remaining enrolled in key subjects until your appeal has been decided.

If you do not Appeal Against Exclusion

If you choose not to appeal against exclusion to the Faculty Appeals Committee, your enrolment will be cancelled and your exclusion confirmed 21 days after the appeal closing date.
