Les Burr

Deputy Director
Student Services
Charles Sturt University

Leslie Burr was born. Despite several early attempts to reverse that process, one involving the disassembling of a fully wound clockwork train, another a practical investigation of charged paper capacitors, Les still finds himself fascinated by the relationship between learning and technology.

A serial early adopter of technology, Les has inhabited the educational technology jungle for 25 years, discovering the food chain of educational television, computer assisted language learning, interactive video disc, videoconferencing and online learning.

A passion for history has resulted in a study of film exhibition in rural north east Victoria, a study of the development of the video phone and a pictorial journey retracing the steps of the explorer of inland Australia, Charles Sturt.

Les also has a background in teaching with qualifications in educational research, technology and management, and has recently submitted his masters thesis which analyses the nature of online interaction.

For the past five years, as Manager of CSU Online, Les was responsible for Charles Sturt University's online environments. Recently he has been appointed Deputy Director of Student Services at Charles Sturt University.

Liz Smith
Senior Online Training & Development Coordinator
Student Services
Charles Sturt University

My interest in online technologies continues to grow as I endeavour to keep my skills above that of my 5 and 2 year old children!

My professional background is strongly grounded in education, with teaching experience in several settings including the K-6 classroom, special education, music tuition, TAFE and university.

After joining the CSU staff as an educational designer, I became particularly interested in information and communication technologies and their application to teaching and learning. As CSU were emerging as a leader in the field of online provision of education I studied for postgraduate qualifications in educational technology and was appointed as a technology specialist in educational design. I was awarded the Creative Informatics Award at Deakin for the Best Postgraduate Student Multimedia Project.

In 1998 I took up the position of Senior Online Learning & Development Coordinator in Student Services which has allowed me to combine my interests in educational design, technology and teaching.

In 1999 I was awarded an ASCILITE* Award for the Exemplarary Use of Technology in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education. I currently teach the STUDY LINK subject Skills for Learning Online, am responsible for the online resource development for Student Services, orientation sessions in IT and university wide projects to further develop and promote the online services and IT literacy for CSU students.
