As the HECS census date approaches each March and August (for students studying in the autumn/ spring session mode), many students will be reassessing their priorities and commitments. It is important to take stock of your commitments to study, and your other commitments. Have your circumstances and priorities changed since you enrolled at the start of the session? Were you aware of the amount of time and energy studying would require of you? Try and project into the future - will you have the time that you will need to continue to study this session? Can you foresee any other commitments or changes which might impact on your study?
If so, now is the time to make some decisions regarding your study. If you don't make these decisions, the result could be a costly HECS bill (or loss of up-front fees) and a failed subject, which you will have to repeat.
Think carefully before you do alter your enrolment. There may be undesirable or unexpected consequences: eg. it may change your eligibility for Youth Allowance or other Centrelink payments (normally, you are required to be enrolled in 3 subjects to be considered a full time student). Of course, if you do withdraw from a subject(s), it will add to the time it takes to complete your course.
So, it's not an easy decision to make, but sometimes the best course of action is to withdraw from one or more subjects to lighten the load.
It can help to talk it over with someone, to weigh up the pros and cons. If you do want to discuss your options, you can contact a student counsellor, lecturer, or liaison officer for your course in Student Administration.
