Complaints procedures
If you think that you have been discriminated against or treated in an inappropriate way, but are not sure what to do about it, please first discuss the matter with a member of staff at CSU with whom you feel comfortable. This could be a counsellor or DLO at Student Services; one of your teaching staff; Equal Opportunity staff; or the University Ombudsman.
The formal complaints procedure is listed on the University Ombudsman's website. The philosophy behind these procedures is that a complaint should be dealt with as close as possible to where it occurs, and as soon as possible after it occurs.
However, if you feel that your complaint is better dealt with by an external body, then there are two legislation-based approaches you can take.
- Either you can approach the NSW Anti Discrimination Board which is responsible for the state Anti Discrimination Act . The Board receives and attempts to conciliate complaints of discrimination; where conciliation is not successful, a complaint may be referred to the Equal Opportunity Division of the Administrative Decisions Tribunal for a public hearing.
- OR you can go to HREOC which is empowered to handle discrimination complaints covered by Federal anti-discrimination legislation, ie. the Racial Discrimination Act, the Sex Discrimination Act and the Disability Discrimination Act.
