Costs Of Studying And Financial Support

This section outlines some of the major costs you could face as a student. The information should be reviewed to ensure you are aware of the costs you will incur as part of your course or living on campus. However, some potential costs are not covered, for example, fees charged for the late return of library books and similar costs which can be incurred owing to the actions of students. It does included topics on student course fee contributions, be it government supported students or full fee paying students, and other charges for on campus students like accommodation, internet and printing and residential school costs for DE students.

The university provides services to support students with their financial needs as well as guidance on scholarships, loans and other available supports. Review all this information as you may be eligible for financial assistance.

Government Supported Students

A Commonwealth supported place is a higher education place for which the Commonwealth makes a contribution towards the cost of your education. Commonwealth supported students pay a student contribution (formerly HECS) towards the cost of tuition, the proportion of which is determined by CSU within guidelines set by the Government. The student contribution depends on your units of study.

Undergraduate Or Postgraduate Full Fee Paying

The Australian Government does not contribute towards the study costs of full fee paying students, who pay a tuition fee for each subject in the course.

International Students

International Students

Students without Australian or New Zealand citizenship or who do not have permanent residency status in Australia , will incur additional or alternative costs. All international students studying in Australia must take out Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the duration of their study.

On Campus Students

Accommodation

CSU has University managed accommodation at the Albury-Thurgoona, Bathurst , Dubbo, Orange and Wagga Wagga campuses. The styles and types of accommodation vary from campus to campus. In addition to the annual accommodation charges, upon making an application all first year students are required to pay an application fee, services fee, and an orientation week rate.

Distance Students

Accommodation Residential School

During residential schools, distance education students may choose to stay on-campus at Bathurst , Orange and Wagga Wagga. On-campus student accommodation is not available at Albury, however the Accommodation Officer, Albury-Thurgoona will assist in arranging off-campus accommodation for students at Albury. There are both catered and self catered options. Please note there are also administration charges if you alter or cancel your booking.

Internet

CSU provides access to the Internet from Halls of Residence, computer laboratories and Libraries. Using the Internet at CSU will cost you money and your Internet Account must be in credit to use this service. The charge is for any data you download from outside of the CSU website. For instance, browsing a commercial website site will cost money but using online information and services within my.csu will not.

Phone

Individual phones are installed in the majority of student bedrooms and can be
used by students to receive calls. To make phone calls from your bedroom phone you will need to purchase a CSU Calling Card from the Mini Market for Bathurst and Wagga Wagga; at the cashiers for Albury and Orange campuses; and at the front desk for Dubbo Campus residents.

Printing

Printing facilities (both Colour and Black and White) are available in the Computer laboratories and libraries for students at Bathurst , Wagga Wagga, Thurgoona and Albury campuses. Printing charges are based on the cost of a printed page and printing accounts must be kept in credit to use this service.

Textbooks

Textbooks are available on campus from the University Co-op Bookshop. Once you have purchased a share in the Co-op you are entitled to life membership and you may receive discounts on books and stationery. You also receive an 8% discount off prescribed or recommended texts for GST (conditions apply). The cost of textbooks can vary depending on the course and its subjects. Scholarships

There are a wide variety of scholarships available to students at all stages of their academic career, ranging from academic merit, leadership and motivation, to scholarships for those from an indigenous, disadvantaged or financial hardship background.  For further information and details on eligibility, access the scholarships website using the associated keyword at:  University Scholarships   

Undergraduate scholarships are for those students who have not attained their first degree:

Foundation Scholarships and Scholarships offered by other bodies are funded by individuals or organisations that hold a strong belief in supporting the University and its students.

Postgraduate scholarships are generally for students who have already completed an undergraduate degree:

Travel Grants

The Global Exchange Program offers CSU students an opportunity to study overseas and gain credits towards their degree. Travel grants of various amounts are available to eligible and enrolled students participating in the University’s CSU Global Exchange Program.

Standard Student Loans

The aim of the loans scheme is to provide short term financial assistance to enable students to continue their studies. Loans are available to HECS funded students who are currently enrolled at this University. Students also need to be Australian citizens or have permanent residence status, have a satisfactory academic record and the financial capacity to repay a loan.

Emergency Student Loans

The University also operates an emergency loan scheme to assist students in need of urgent financial assistance. Emergency loans are normally only provided for essential expenses associated with a crisis situation. Students should contact a Student Support Officer on their campus.

Student Equity Emergency Cash Grant

Charles Sturt University recognises that unforeseen adverse or emergency events can occur for students. To assist students who suffer such events, CSU offers the Student Equity Emergency Grant (SEEG). The SEEG is a cash grant and is designed for those who are affected by individual disasters outside their personal control (excluding widespread ongoing disasters that affect large numbers of people).  A cash grant of up to $500 will be considered. CSU Laptop Grant

CSU is offering a laptop rebate of up to $250 for first session students at CSU who have purchased a laptop computer in the last 12 months.
