Health Services in Australia

Payment for services

If you attend a doctor or any allied health professional in Australia you will be required to pay the entire invoice at time of service.  Some services will issue you with an account to pay by a certain date.

If you pay at the time of service you will then need to claim that payment from your private health insurance company.  You will need to take the invoice and complete a claim form and submit it at the local office of your health fund.  But you will only receive part of the amount back that you paid.  You will not receive the entire amount back.

If you do not pay the invoice at time of service you need to produce that account at the private health centre and submit a claim.  You will receive a check back from the private health insurance company made out in the name of the service provider.  You will be required to send that cheque to the provider to pay for their services.

Specialists

No one in Australia can attend a specialist unless they have been to a general practitioner first and have a referral.
