Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Scheme (ITAS)

The Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Scheme (ITAS) is an iniative of the Commonwealth Department of Education Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) which aims to improve the educational outcomes of Indigenous students.  Funding is provided for supplementary tuition to support eligible students studying university award level courses but cannot be used to substitute or replace normal teaching resources.

Tuition Delivery

ITAS provides up to two hours assistance per week per subject and up to 5 additional hours in total during examination periods for students who meet the criteria.

Tuition is only available for subjects in a student's formal education program.  It is not available for activities outside of degree requirements eg private music, drama lessons or sports coaching.  It is not usually available for basic literacy, numeracy, enabling or bridging courses unless there are exceptional circumstances.

A student may be determined in need of tuition if they

  • are failing the course/subject and the lecturer believes that the student's performance would improve through additional tuition
  • was just passing the course and the lecturer believes that the student's performance would improve through additional tuition
  • was previously performing satisfactorily but is having difficulties with a new component of the course and is in danger of failing or falling behind, in which case tuition would be short term
  • require tutorial assistance to achieve an academic level or ranking required to proceed to subsequent stage or course of study

Prospective ITAS tutors must

  • be qualified, either through formal education or relevant experience, to be
eligible to deliver tutoring under ITAS (if formally qualified must produce certified
    copies of qualifications)
  • If not formally qualified must be able to produce suitable written references to establish if an appropriate standard of tuition can be provided in the subject area
  • be sensitive to and able to relate to, the educational needs of Indigenous students (wherever possible suitably qualified Indigenous people are selected as ITAS tutors)

An ITAS tutor cannot

  • be a member of the student's immediate or de facto family
  • be the student's usual class or subject teacher, lecturer or tutor

Each student/tutor arrangement will be examined for potential conflict before approval can be given.
