Indigenous Student Services has been operating at Charles Sturt University since 1991. During that time, the activities have focused on the provision of academic, personal and cultural support for Indigenous students.
Under CSU's current organisational structure, the different locations are directly responsible to the Executive Director, Division of Student Services. Opportunities for involvement in the day-to-day affairs of University life are provided through representation on a range of academic, administrative and student forums. These include ex-officio membership on the University's Academic Senate, standing representation on the four Faculty Boards (Arts, Business, Education and Science), and membership on the Student Equity Committee, Special Admission's Committee and EEO Committee.
In addition, the Division of Library Services has an Indigenous Liaison Team who are available for students to contact for individual or group library instruction or assistance.

The Manager of the Special Programs area has responsibility for managing the income and expenditure of the Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Scheme (ITAS) and Away From Base Scheme funded by Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR).
ITAS funding is provided to Indigenous Student Services for the purpose of engaging appropriately qualified tutors to supplement student learning in respect of the academic requirements of a particular subject or group of subjects within the student's degree program.
The Away From Base Scheme provides for payment of travel and accommodation costs associated with Distance Education students' attendance and participation in compulsory residential schools as part of the academic requirements of a particular program of study.
The role of the Learning Skills Adviser is to assist students to adapt to the university environment and to acquire the necessary skills to succeed in study at university.
In doing so, Learning Skills Advisers provide assistance in essay writing, referencing, exam preparation, effective reading, note taking and time management.

The role of the Indigenous Student Recruitment and Retention Officer is to develop and implement programs to recruit and facilitate the retention of Indigenous students as part of the Recruitment Team in the Division of Marketing and Communication.
The Community and Student Liaison Officers deliver a coordinating role for the campus Unit, to assist with the smooth running and integration of the Unit, staff and support and services to students. This is done through the development and maintenance of a broad University-wide network and through a high level of liaison with all areas of the University,
The role of the Administrative Assistants is the provision of general clerical assistance and assistance to students.
