
Joel Russell BA, DipEd MappLing (TESOL) is a non-Indigenous person from Six Nations country in upstate New York. He has lived and worked with people from several different cultures in Australia and overseas. As a result of his own experiences, he has developed a keen interest in understanding how people go about fitting into different cultures, such as the culture of studying at a University. He is involved in a research project to collect ideas from Indigenous students at CSU, about how to make the process of becoming a university student easier.
Joel is currently working as a Learning Skills Adviser at the School of Policing Studies, at the Goulburn campus of Charles Sturt University. He worked previously at Ngungilanna, Indigenous Student Services at the Wagga Wagga campus of CSU. At Wagga Wagga, Joel was involved in running workshops and providing learning support for Indigenous students enrolled in the Bachelor of Health Sciences (Mental Health) course.
Prior to working for CSU, Joel worked at James Cook University as a Learning Skills Adviser. He then lectured in the Indigenous tertiary access program at James Cook University. He also lectured in a subject in English for Academic Purposes, which was part of the Remote Aboriginal Teacher Education Program, for trainee teachers.
Qualifications in detail are:
Bachelor of Arts in Education, English Literature and Linguistics; Diploma of Education in Primary School Education; and a Masters of Applied Linguistics in Teaching English as a Second or Other Language.
