Student Loans
The aim of the special assistance loans scheme is to provide short term financial assistance to enable students to continue their studies.
Are you eligible to apply for a loan?
The interest free loans are available to HECS funded students who are currently enrolled at CSU. Students also need to be Australian citizens or have permanent residence status, have a satisfactory academic record, no outstanding debts with the university and the financial capacity to repay a loan.
Loans may be approved for....
- Costs of meeting the educational requirements of their course (Not Course Fees)
- Text book purchase
- Compulsory student excursions
- Compulsory equipment
- travelling expenses (internship, practicum)
- other educational expenses as approved
- Costs for meeting other contingencies to ensure a student remains enrolled in a course, e.g.:
- Food
- Off campus rent
- Bonds
- Fares
- Costs associated with casual employment
- Utilities
- Vehicle maintenance expenses
Loans may not be approved for...
- on campus accommodation
- payment of HECS
- holidays
- debt consolidation
- fines (University or other)
Before you apply for a loan, have you looked at other options?
How do you apply for a loan?
- Student makes an appointment with SSO for a loan application
- Paperwork provided to student and support where needed (i.e. Budgeting)
- Paperwork completed and returned to SSO (including supporting documentation)
- Division of Finance contacted to see if students is eligible (no outstanding debts and good academic record)
- Loan applications number given
- Paperwork sent to Loans officer in the Division of Finance
- Finance process the loan application
- Third Party paid on behalf of Student
There are some conditions that apply:
- Total loan limit to $2000.00
- A First year student may borrow up to $300 before they need a guarantor
- For second or above, students may borrow up to $600 before they need a guarantor (Noting that Students who have not completed one third of the course of study towards their award will be requested to have a guarantor (64 credit points)
- The above limits are guidelines only and students may be required to provide security for lesser amounts

Supporting Documentation
- Student identification card
- Photocopy of source of income e.g. Austudy or Youth Allowance letter from Centrelink which quotes your entitlement, bank statements showing regular deposits, a statement from your employer, or applicable pay slips, or a statement from your parents supporting any allowance paid to you.
- The account which is to be paid (third party)
- The signed guarantor form, if required.
Loan Repayments
Loans are repaid in weekly or fortnightly installments at the Cashier's office. For more detailed loan guidelines see the Loans Officer at Student Services.
If you cannot repay the loan (or the installment) by the agreed date, it is essential that you contact Financial Services before that date, to negotiate repayment arrangements. Failure to do so may result in administrative/penalty charges, the withholding of your examination results and refusal or cancellation of your enrolment.
