Equity Scholarships at CSU

The Commonwealth and CSU Equity Scholarships Program aims to assist students from low socio-economic backgrounds, particularly those from rural and regional areas and Indigenous students, with costs associated with higher education.

Outlined below is the following:

Commonwealth Scholarship Changes

Charles Sturt University will continue to administer continuing Commonwealth Scholarships for recipients who were awarded their Commonwealth Scholarship (i.e. CAS & CECS) prior to 2010 by CSU, under the Commonwealth Government's Scholarship Guidelines and the 'grandfathering' agreement.

CSU will continue to administer the allocation of new and continuing Indigenous Commonwealth Scholarships under the Commonwealth Government's Scholarship Guidelines.

Commonwealth and Institutional Equity Scholarships at CSU

The CSU Equity Scholarship (CSUES)    

This is an Institutional Equity Scholarship and is available to new or current CSU Students. Applicants apply through UAC or VTAC or direct to CSU Scholarship Office for the 2012 allocation of the CSUES. Refer to Key Dates and How to Apply for further details of application deadlines and how to apply for this scholarship.

Indigenous Commonwealth Scholarships     

CSU continues to administer the new allocation of these scholarships and students apply for these via UAC or VTAC or direct to CSU Scholarship Office for the 2012 allocation. The Indigenous Commonwealth Scholarships encompass the Indigenous Access Scholarship (IAS), the Indigenous-Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarship (I-CECS) and the Indigenous-Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarship (I-CAS).  Successful applicants for the IAS may also receive, subject to availability, an Indigenous-CECS and if eligible an Indigenous-CAS.

Commonwealth Scholarships

New allocation of non indigenous Commonwealth Scholarships are no longer administered on behalf of the Commonwealth Government by Universities for new students. These CS are the Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarships (CAS), the CAS-Specialist, the Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarships (CECS) and the CECS-Priority.

From January 2010 Centrelink will administer the new Government Scholarships named the 'Start-Up' (equivalent to the CECS) and 'Relocation' (equivalent to the CAS) Scholarships, as announced in the 2009 Commonwealth Government Budget. The Start-Up and Relocation Scholarships replace the non indigenous Commonwealth Scholarships. More information on the Start-Up and Relocation Scholarships can be found at the Centrelink website.

Current Recipients of the Commonwealth Scholarships at CSU

Those recipients who received their Commonwealth Scholarship prior to 2010, Charles Sturt University will continue to administer current Commonwealth Scholarship recipients under the Commonwealth Government's 'grandfathering' agreement.

CSU Masters Equity Scholarship (CSUMES)

The CSUMES is an Institutional Equity Scholarships available to new and current CSU students studying a coursework postgraduate Masters course.  Applications for the CSUMES are submitted direct to the Scholarship Office at CSU. CSU 'Pathway and Partnership' Scholarship

This an Institutional Equity Scholarship available to new or current undergraduate CSU Students. Scholarship Description and Value 2012

  1. Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarships (CAS) for ongoing recipients only. Value in 2012 is $4,754 p.a. and allocated for a maximum period of 4 years. For accommodation and general education costs.
  2. Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarships-Specialist (CAS-Specialist) for ongoing recipients only.  Value in 2012 is $4,754 p.a. and allocated for a maximum period of 4 years. For accommodation and general education costs.
  3. Indigenous-Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarships (ICAS) for commencing and current students. Value in 2012 is $4,754 p.a. and allocated for a maximum period of 4 years. For accommodation and general education costs.
  4. Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarships (CECS) for ongoing recipients only.  Value in 2012 is $2,377 p.a. and allocated for a maximum period of 4 years. For general education costs.
  5. Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarships-Priority (CECS-Priority) for ongoing recipients only.  Value in 2012 is $2,377 p.a. and allocated for a maximum period of 4 years. For general education costs.
  6. Indigenous-Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarships (ICECS) for commencing and current students.  Value in 2012 is $2,377 p.a. and allocated for a maximum period of 4 years. For general education costs.
  7. Indigenous Access Scholarship (IAS) for commencing and current students.  The IAS is a once-only scholarship payment valued at $4,485 in 2012. Allocated to assist Indigenous students to undertake either an eligible enabling course or an undergraduate course. Each provider awarding an IAS to a student, may, subject to availability, provide the student with an Indigenous-Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarship (I-CECS) and, where enough scholarships are available and the student is eligible, an Indigenous-Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarship (I-CAS).
  8. CSU Equity Scholarships (CSUES) for commencing and current undergraduate students.  The CSUES is an Institutional Equity Scholarship valued at $2,000 p.a. for a maximum 1 year period. For general education costs.
  9. CSU Masters Equity Scholarship (CSUMES) for commencing and current postgraduate Masters students.  The CSUMES is an Institutional Equity Scholarship valued at $2,000 p.a. for a maximum 1 year period. For general education costs.
  10. CSU 'Pathway and Partnership' Scholarship  Valued at $2,000 in 2012 allocated for 1 year.  The CSU 'Pathway and Partnership' Scholarship programme available to students studying in a CSU Pathway or  Integrated Program with Charles Sturt University (CSU) and our TAFE Institute Partners.
