Why see a Counsellor?
People seek the help of a counsellor for all sorts of reasons. Sometimes it is something that can be addressed without too much difficulty, but sometimes the reason for seeing a counsellor can be something that is affecting many areas of a persons??? life. Here are some examples of reasons why a person might see a counsellor:
- Feeling unsure about your ability to cope with university demands.
- Having difficulty with a relationship.
- Experiencing difficulties with loss or grief.
- Concerned about a friend.
- Having problems with friends or those you are living with.
- Stressed about exams or any other reason.
- Feeling confused, anxious, depressed, lonely or angry.
- Experiencing any emotions or thoughts that you find unpleasant or are negatively influencing your life.
Confidentiality
It is important that you know all matters discussed with Student Counsellors are held in professional confidence. Nothing concerning a person is reported elsewhere unless prior consent by you. If a lecturer or a parent calls a counsellor wanting to know if you are seeking the help of a counsellor, the counsellor is not allowed to say whether you are attending or not. Only with your permission can the counsellor disclose to someone else that you are attending counselling.
In very extreme circumstances (e.g. to protect the personal safety of someone), counsellors may be required to break confidentiality. This is necessary to conform with certain legal/ethical requirements. As far as possible the counsellor would seek approval from you before doing this.
Counselling for Distance Education Students
If you live near a CSU campus, arrangements will be made for face to face counselling. If you live elsewhere, you can register for online counselling or an appointment can be made via Student Central for telephone counselling. We may also be able to refer you to an appropriate service in your local area.
Counsellors are available all year round. Contact Student Central (1800 ASK CSU) at your campus to arrange a mutually convenient time to meet with a counsellor.
