Pre-exit Checklist
There may seem to be a hundred and one tasks to complete before you can board the plane for your return trip home! Use this list to help you organise your plans for returning home. You may like to add other items.
Things to do before departure:
- Give notice in writing of the date you will leave your accommodation (off-campus). Do this within the time specified on your lease or contract (usually 4 weeks).
- Arrange for the premises (off-campus) to be inspected and request the return of your Bond money (assuming you have met all the conditions of your tenancy agreement).
- If you have a telephone & internet, arrange to have it disconnected and settle accounts.
- Arrange for disconnection of electricity and/or gas services and refund of any deposits (off-campus).
- Return your accommodation keys to the appropriate staff member (on-campus) or property owner (off-campus).
- Redirect mail at the Post Office and Student Administration.
- Close your bank account and have some cash flow for souvenir, departure tax, excess baggage etc.
- Give notice to your employer and arrange to collect your last pay. Complete a tax return.
- File any medical insurance claims that are still outstanding. Pay the balance that you owe.
- Return borrowed items (library books, household equipment etc).
- Clear your student account at the University cashier so your Academic Transcript can be released.
- Make sure that Student Administration has your correct address to send graduation notices.
- Check your passport for the correct visa if you are stopping over in another country on your way home.
- Check with your Embassy or Consulate Customs Office on regulations when considering what to take home.
- Investigate cheap alternatives to freight excess baggage.
- Do not sneak out of town. Call or visit your friends before you go.
- Notify your family of your arrival, do not surprise them. They need time to prepare for your return home too.
- Make arrangements for transportation to the airport early, particularly if you have a lot of baggage. Plan to arrive early.
