Student Personal Accident Insurance

Charles Sturt University Student Personal Accident Insurance is held with AIG, (American Home Assurance) and dealt with through MARSH Pty Ltd.

It provides cover for CSU full time and part time internal students of all campuses in Australia. The policy applies 24 hrs per day, 365 days per year, while a student is actually engaged in university, course or sports-related activities including practical placement, or are engaged in necessary direct travel between the normal place of residence or employment and the place of the university activities.

The policy excludes students 75 years of age and older and provides cover in respect of CSU Distance Education students of all campuses in Australia whilst such persons are on authorised work experience.

What does the Insurance Policy cover?

Non-Medicare related expenses, such as surgical benefits, allied health, bed care benefits. Non-Medicare items are any medical expenses that are not subject to any full or partial Medicare rebate. The insurance company is not allowed, by law, to pay any gaps, regardless of how big the gaps are. Please note that this applies to any PBS prescriptions, which are heavily subsidised by the Commonwealth Government. Loss of wages (not paid for the first seven days of disablement).

The policy is referred to as a "last resort" policy, where all accounts are to be paid prior to lodging a claim. If a student has private health cover, they will need to claim any monies with them, prior to lodging a claim.

Do students need to pay anything?

The student is required to pay the expenses up front and are reimbursed by AIG.

The excess on non-Medicare items is $100.00 and this comes out of any reimbursements due.

What does a student do if they have an accident/incident?

Come and see the Student Support Officer on your campus and provide them with the account of your accident/incident as soon as possible or get someone else to report the accident/incident.

If the SSO feels that the accident/incident happened on campus or relevant practical activity, then the student will be provided with a CSU Accident/Incident Report form. If this form has already been filled this out, the SSO will require a copy.

The student will be provided with an Information Authority and Warranty and an Insurance Company Accident/Incident Report Form.

The student must then complete the forms and return them to the Student Support Officer with any receipts that they already have. The SSO fills in the section on the Student Accident Report Form.

What is included in these forms?

The Student Support Officer will then forward the forms and any subsequent receipts to MARSH. The SSO dealing with the insurance claim will keep the student informed of the progress and promptly forward any cheques to the student.

What if the student requires ongoing treatments?

The student will be issued with a form from the Insurance Provider for the therapist to report on the progress.

The student pays the therapist directly before they are reimbursed by AGI.

It is imperative that the student notifies the Student Support Officer as soon as possible as a "window of opportunity" to claim may be minimal (within weeks).
