Philanthropy, Donations and Sponsorship
About
Charles Sturt University values the support of its communities, businesses, alumni and donors to help it to achieve its mission and to support students to realise their goals.
The Charles Sturt Foundation Limited is the University’s principal fund raising and management body. The not-for-profit company acts as trustee for the Charles Sturt University Foundation Trust and is a controlled entity of the University. The Trust was established to raise funds for the benefit of the University and to assist it to achieve its strategic objects.
In addition to donations, the Trustee manages sponsorships provided by individuals and organisations to support student scholarships, internships and other related activities.
The Foundation is governed by an independent professional board with responsibility for oversighting the generation of philanthropic contributions to the Trust, the growth of funds and the distribution of interest earned from those funds in accordance with the wishes of donors and the terms of the Trust.
To ensure effective alignment of activities, the Vice-Chancellor is chair of the board of directors. The Vice-Chancellor recommends to the Board an annual statement of priorities which are endorsed by the Board and referred to the Foundation Committees (see below) to develop local plans to support the achievement of the objectives.
Finance and Investment Committee
The Board of the Foundation has established a Finance and Investment Committee, including professionals with senior level experience in the investment and finance to manage and grow the Trust for the benefit of the University and its students. Over the last 5 years, the Foundation has achieved an average annual rate of return on investments of 12%, allowing the corpus to grow and the number of student scholarships to expand rapidly.
Foundation Committees
The Foundation is supported by discipline or campus based Foundation Committees that are responsible for developing and implementing annual fundraising plans to support the philanthropic goals approved by the Vice-Chancellor and Foundation Board.
Individual fundraising plans are focussed on addressing the needs of the relevant campus or discipline, and once approved by the Board and Vice-Chancellor, the Committees works through the relevant Head of Campus, Head of School, Dean or other authorised persons to undertake formal fundraising initiatives and activities (approaches, dinners, appeals etc).
Foundation Committees are formally established by the Board of the Charles Sturt Foundation and are authorised, subject to the University and Foundation policies, to undertake fundraising activities and approaches on its behalf.
