Community Relations
About
Charles Sturt University is committed to effective and supportive relationships with our local communities. The University defines its local communities as incorporating all of inland New South Wales and Northern Victoria, the Australian Capital Territory and the Burlington/Hamilton/Niagara region of Ontario, Canada.
Our local communities and businesses are an essential source of support and guidance to the University and our students.
Local communities and businesses support student scholarships and other fundraising goals, accept students on work experience and clinical placements, provide employment opportunities for students while they study, support off-campus residential needs, provide volunteer services to the University and assist with cultural and sporting activities.
Primary responsibility for community relations rests with the Head of each Campus (called Provost in Ontario).
Role of Regional Consultative Committees
The University has established Regional Consultative Committees to bring together the thinking and ideas of our local communities and provide a direct mechanism for engagement around issues and opportunities. Regional Consultative Committees are based at the Albury-Wodonga Campus (for the Murray River region), Bathurst-Orange Campuses (for the Central Western Region), the Dubbo Campus (for the Northern and Far Western NSW Region) and the Wagga Wagga Campus (for the Riverina/ Southern NSW Region). The Committees meet quarterly and involve community and business leaders from across the relevant region. The Committees are chaired by the Head of Campus and meet together annually in Bathurst.
Role of Campus Development Committees
The Campus Development Committees (see Philanthropy and Donations) are authorised by the Charles Sturt Foundation Ltd to develop fundraising plans for the local campus and to work to implement those plans. The work of the Campus Development Committee is undertaken by the Regional Consultative Committee in all locations except Orange-Bathurst and Wagga Wagga.
Role of Head of Campus
The Head of Campus/Provost is the University’s principal public relations officer for each of the defined regions. The Head of Campus:
- represents the University at community and business functions and on relevant boards and committees;
- engages with local businesses to maintain and build support for the work of the University;
- liaises with local governments in the region on behalf of the University;
- provides feedback to Vice-Chancellor and senior officers on community, business and local government needs;
- provides support on behalf of the University to community functions;
- host Graduation Ceremonies on each campus;
- identify opportunities for local business and industry to support campus based initiatives and philanthropic activities;
- manage student discipline on each Campus;
- represents the University on, or chairs, the Campus Development Committee (see Philanthropy and Donations).
Role of the Office of Corporate Affairs
The University Relations Unit within the Office of Corporate Affairs:
- provides strategic advice as required to Heads of Campus on specific issues or initiatives;
- manages the University’s central authoritative invitation list broken down by discipline and location to support functions and events.
