L'illustration et le texte: ressources bibliographiques (Français / English)
- Includes more than 300 experiments in picto-verbal research. We limit our concern to those studies: (a) in which pictures / images are treated as explicitly identified independent variables of the experimental design and (b) in which the pictorial effect on the dependent measure is analysed by means of appropriate statistical tests. Each picto-verbal experiment is described with respect to the following information: experimental subjects, ratio words-picture, text presentation, text type, semantic relationship between text and picture, type of picture, experimental design, independent and dependent variables, results, methodological remarks. Based on this information, separate analyses and specific comparisons are realized, the most important ones being: illustrated versus nonillustrated text (chapter 2), pictoverbal interactional effects (chapter 3), comparison of different images with respect to text comprehension (chapter 4), effects of the chronological and spatial relationship between image and text (chapter 5), subject-generated images versus subject-imposed images (chapter 6), image versus film (chapter 7), semantic incompatibilities between image and text (chapter 8).

Learning through Collaborative Visualization
- Traditionally, K-12 science education has consisted of the teaching of well-established facts. This approach bears little or no resemblance to the question-centered, collaborative practice of realscientists. Through the use of advanced technologies, the CoVis Project at Northwestern University is attempting to transform science learning to better resemble the authentic practice ofscience. The CoVis Project will explore issues of scaling, diversity, and sustainability as they relate to theuse of networking technologies to enable high school students to work in collaboration with remotestudents, teachers, and scientists. An important outcome of this work will be the construction ofdistributed electronic communities dedicated to science learning.Participating students study atmospheric and environmental sciences through inquiry-basedactivities. Using state of the art scientific visualization software, specially modified to beappropriate to a learning environment, students have access to the same research tools and data setsused by leading-edge scientists in the field. The CoVis Project provides students with a range of collaboration and communication tools. Theseinclude: desktop video teleconferencing; shared software environments for remote, real-timecollaboration; access to the resources of the Internet; a multimedia scientist's "notebook"; andscientific visualization software. In addition to deploying new technology, we work closely withteachers at participating schools to develop new curricula and new pedagogical approaches that takeadvantage of project-enhanced science learning. Òƒollaborative VisualizationÓ thus refers todevelopment of scientific understanding which is mediated by scientific visualization tools in acollaborative context. The CoVis Project seeks to understand how science education could takebroad advantage of these capabilities, providing motivating experiences for students and teacherswith contemporary science tools and topics. The next decade will bring widespread, networked multimedia interpersonal computing. The CoVisProject is a blueprint to inform educators, researchers, and policy makers on the effective andsustainable use of interpersonal, collaborative media in science education.
