Learning Lab Denmark
- Established by the Danish Government in 2001, Learning Lab Denmark is a centre for research on learning, affiliated to the Danish University of Education. We aim to solve urgent societal problems related to learning, through experimental and practice-oriented research and development activities. We do this together with dedicated partners from different societal sectors. Learning Lab Denmark consists of a secretariat and seven research consortia: project clusters that conduct research and development activities under a thematic headline. Our work takes two primary paths: Collaborating with partners in the educational sector, we develop tools for learning and teaching in and for pedagogical institutions. Collaborating with representatives from the business sector, we develop tools that can facilitate organisational and individual learning processes in various types of both public and private organisations. Our visionIn terms of research, organisation and communication, Learning Lab Denmark aims to be at the forefront in both national and international contexts. In order to do so, two principles are particularly important to us: our Learning Lab Denmark style of research and our ambition to put communication at the centre of everything we do. Combining theory and practice As for research we aim to closely integrate theory and practice. With a focus on ‘action research’ in method, Learning Lab Denmark will constantly seek to build bridges across different sectors. Our aim is to work intensively with both the business community and other groups of society. We see the different participating parties more as equal partners in a development process than as mere research objects.

Learning through Collaborative Visualization
- Traditionally, K-12 science education has consisted of the teaching of well-established facts. This approach bears little or no resemblance to the question-centered, collaborative practice of realscientists. Through the use of advanced technologies, the CoVis Project at Northwestern University is attempting to transform science learning to better resemble the authentic practice ofscience. The CoVis Project will explore issues of scaling, diversity, and sustainability as they relate to theuse of networking technologies to enable high school students to work in collaboration with remotestudents, teachers, and scientists. An important outcome of this work will be the construction ofdistributed electronic communities dedicated to science learning.Participating students study atmospheric and environmental sciences through inquiry-basedactivities. Using state of the art scientific visualization software, specially modified to beappropriate to a learning environment, students have access to the same research tools and data setsused by leading-edge scientists in the field. The CoVis Project provides students with a range of collaboration and communication tools. Theseinclude: desktop video teleconferencing; shared software environments for remote, real-timecollaboration; access to the resources of the Internet; a multimedia scientist's "notebook"; andscientific visualization software. In addition to deploying new technology, we work closely withteachers at participating schools to develop new curricula and new pedagogical approaches that takeadvantage of project-enhanced science learning. Òƒollaborative VisualizationÓ thus refers todevelopment of scientific understanding which is mediated by scientific visualization tools in acollaborative context. The CoVis Project seeks to understand how science education could takebroad advantage of these capabilities, providing motivating experiences for students and teacherswith contemporary science tools and topics. The next decade will bring widespread, networked multimedia interpersonal computing. The CoVisProject is a blueprint to inform educators, researchers, and policy makers on the effective andsustainable use of interpersonal, collaborative media in science education.

Resource Guide for the Standards and Rubrics for School Improvement
- The Standards and Rubrics for School Improvement are used by schools across Arizona in order to identify the strengths and limitations of their overall program. This web resource guide is a support for those standards and rubrics, as well as a tool to address the indicators stated in the standards. The Standards and Rubrics for School Improvement are anchored in the scientifically research-based principles and indicators that consistently distinguish top-performing schools. The indicators are defined within the following four standards: Standard 1: School and District Leadership Capacity Standard 2: Curriculum, Instruction, and Professional Development Standard 3: Classroom and School Assessments Standard 4: School Culture, Climate, and Communication When a standards-based school engages in the process of assessing the strengths and weaknesses of its educational program, it is vital to begin with an open mind, making no assumptions. By drawing attention to the four standards related to improving student achievement, this resource guide can help ensure that the assessment is evidence-based and thorough. The conclusions drawn from examining these standards become the foundation for a solid school improvement plan.
