This qualification reflects the role of individuals who use well-developed administrative skills and a broad knowledge base in a wide variety of administrative contexts. They apply to a defined range of unpredictable problems, and analyse and evaluate information from a variety of sources. They may provide leadership and guidance to others with some limited responsibility for the output of others.

Prerequisite requirements

There are no prerequisite requirements for individual units of competency.

Pathways into the qualification

Preferred pathways for candidates considering this qualification include:

after achieving the BSB30407Certificate III Business Administration or other relevant qualification/s

or

  • providing evidence of competency in the majority of units required for the BSB30407Certificate III Business Administration or other relevant qualification/s

or

  • with some vocational experience in providing administrative or operational support to individuals and/or teams but without a formal business administration qualification.

Pathways from the qualification

After achieving the BSB40507 Certificate IV in Business Administration, candidates may undertake the BSB50407 Diploma of Business Administration, a qualification for those wishing to develop specialised technical or theoretical management skills. The Diploma of Business is not offered by CSU training.

Candidates may undertake BSB51107 Diploma of Management. Candidates who enjoy training co-workers may choose to study TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. Both qualifications are offered by CSU Training.

Delivery arrangements

This program is delivered over a 24 month period. The program will be supported by the CSU Training Program Coordinator and designated trainer/assessors will guide the learning and conduct assessment.

All participants will attend a half day introduction workshop where: the program will be explained; the first unit commenced, including clarification of the assessment requirements; and learning teams formed.

The program will be delivered in the workplace using a variety of methods including:

  • Self paced Learning and Assessment Guides, some provided on-line via CSU Interact.?? Learning and Assessment guides will contain information relevant to the topic, learning activities, examples of best practice in business administration and assessment tasks.
  • Face to face workshops delivered by CSU staff with expertise in particular administrative areas. Workshops will link to CSU policies, procedures and service standards.
  • Mentors will be arranged for those participants who request this support.
  • Learning Teams - participants are expected to work in learning teams comprising 3 to 4 people. The purpose of the learning team is to provide collegial support in the form of a forum for discussion and sharing of ideas and practice. Sometimes the Learning Guide will direct learning teams to discuss particular topics and share tasks. Other times the members may decide to meet to focus on a particular area of interest.
  • Networking - participants are encouraged to meet with colleagues undertaking the program to share their practice, learning and ideas.
  • Trainer/assessor support - The CSU Training Trainer/Assessor will maintain contact with the participants and monitor progress, provide feedback and clarify any areas of concern.

Assessment

Program participants will be assessed through a combination of observation and demonstration in the work place; self paced learning activities; question and answer activities; case studies; workplace projects; work documents and third party reports from participant's managers/ supervisors.

A CSU Trainer/ Assessor will be appointed to support participants in their study and to conduct assessment of completed units.

Recognition (RPL) will be available. The recognition process will include; Interview with Trainer/ Assessor to discuss experience and skills, Workplace demonstration and viewing of workplace documents, Question and Answer and Third Party Report. A Recognition Kit containing instructions, sample questions and templates for each unit will be made available by the trainer/assessors to candidates seeking recognition.

Roles and responsibilities

There are several stakeholders in the CSU Certificate IV in Business Administration Program. The roles and responsibilities of all stakeholders will be described in detail once you enrol in the program. For the purposes of this paper, the role of CSU Training will be described briefly and the role and responsibilities of participants and their supervisors will be explained in detail, as this information is important in helping you and your supervisor decide whether you can commit to the program.

CSU Training's Role:

To organise the program, deliver and assess the qualification, support and guide participants to complete the qualifications, monitor participant progress and issue the Certificate.

Supervisors and Managers

Role:

To support the participant in undertaking the program by providing access to the appropriate people, time, information and resources to satisfactorily complete the qualification.

Responsibilities

Meet travel and accommodation costs associated with the program. These events include:

Pay the program fee - $3,057

3.

Support the participant by meeting on a regular basis to:

- Discuss opportunities to apply their learning within the workplace

- Assist with identifying appropriate and suitable work based projects

- Provide advice, guidance and feedback as required

Complete the Third party report for each unit.

Support the participant in time release to schedule meetings with their Learning Team, Mentor and Trainer/Assessor.

5.

Support the workplace visit schedule of the Trainer/Assessor.

6.

Provision of coaching support when required by the participant to achieve the performance criteria.

7.

Observe the policy and procedure of the Study Time Scheme for General Staff when considering participant requests for support. These documents can be accessed from the Administration Manual at:

Provide constructive feedback about the participant's performance and progress in the program during their annual Performance Management meeting.

9.

Provide opportunities in the workplace for the participant to enhance organisational capability and apply the knowledge, skills and attitudes acquired during the program in alignment with the University Strategy 2007-2011.

Responsibilities

Actively engage in enhancing or developing new workplace learning opportunities.

3.

Reflect on workplace learning experiences and the learning that has occurred with members of your learning team or other participants, your mentor and your supervisor or manager.

4.

Be willing to commit time to the program to prepare evidence to meet the assessment requirements of the units. An estimated time of 6-10 hours per week is required for each unit, but this will depend on each participant's learning style, prior knowledge and experience and opportunities for work based learning.

5.

Adhere to the learning and assessment schedule developed in consultation with your Trainer/Assessor.

6.

Participate in scheduled assessment and monitoring events scheduled by the Trainer/Assessor.

7.

Submit your own authentic and original assessment tasks and evidence.

8.

Actively participate in learning team meetings and activities

9.

Submit written assessment items on time (or in exceptional circumstances seek approval for an extension of the deadline with the Trainer/Assessor).

10.

Achieve competence in the units of the course you have chosen.

11.

Provide feedback to CSU Training on the delivery of the program.

12.

Raise any concerns you may have with the relevant person and ask for help at the point of need. Complaints about learning and assessment should firstly be directed to the Manager, CSU Training.
