CSU Training offers HLT40512 Certificate IV in Hospital-Health Services Pharmacy Support from the HLT07 Training Package.


This qualification covers pharmacy assistants and technicians who provide a range of technical functions under the supervision of a pharmacist in a hospital or community setting. This may include pharmacies that are located outside of health services but supply medicines and products to hospitals and other health services. These workers may also have the role of coordinating the work of pharmacy assistants or aides.


This qualification is suited to Australian Apprenticeship pathways. This qualification is not applicable to retail pharmacy workers.

Pathways

After achieving Certificate IV in Hospital Health Services Pharmacy Support, candidates may undertake another qualification at Certificate IV or Diploma level relevant to career goals and aspirations e.g. TAE40110 Certificate IV in raining and Assessment or BSB51107 Diploma of Management.

Entry Requirements

To gain entry into this qualification, candidates must be working in a hospital or community pharmacy. This may include pharmacies that are located outside of health services but supply medicines and products to hospitals and other health services. Candidates must demonstrate competence in the following units of competency, through a recognised training program or recognition process:

Note: Students who work, or intend to work, in hospital pharmacies in Victoria, will also be required to satisfactorily complete a forensic module approved by the Pharmacy Board of Victoria. The student's hospital will assist with access to an appropriate forensic module.

Course Duration

Study is self paced. Students are expected to complete the qualification within 24 months.

Requirements

Trainees are required to:

  • Be working in a Hospital or Community Pharmacy (not retail)
  • Be in a position to complete the study within 24 months
  • Have the support of their workplace supervisor, who is:
    • in a position to ensure the learner has adequate time and appropriate resources to learn on the job
    • authorised by the pharmacy to sign a third party report to verify competence on- the -job in line with specific behaviours relevant to each unit of study
    • in a position to arrange specialist coaching in specific work skills and/or access to specialist personnel as necessary and required
  • Nominate a workplace mentor, approved by the pharmacy, who will guide and support the trainee in learning the required competencies. Mentors are required to have completed a CSU Training Workplace Mentor Module; training is provided when the student enrols. Ideally the mentor should not be the supervisor. The mentor could be:
    • A pharmacy technician or senior pharmacy technician who has completed HLT40512 or HLT40507 Certificate IV in Hospital/ Health Services Pharmacy Support or HLT40502 Certificate IV in Health Service Assistance (Hospital/Community Health Pharmacy Technician) or
    • A pharmacist who is in a position to meet regularly with the learner to discuss learning and provide coaching in the required work skills

 

Delivery

Learners will be supported by a learning facilitator, who will be appointed at the time of enrolment. The learning facilitator will conduct an initial telephone interview with the learner to discuss study goals and personal circumstances, to confirm electives, to establish whether recognition may be appropriate and to set a study schedule.

The learning facilitator will be available via telephone and email throughout the course of study to provide guidance and feedback to the learner. Workplace mentors will support the learner to learn new skills and apply new knowledge in the workplace. Learners will submit completed assessment tasks to the learning facilitator for assessment.

Learners will receive a folder containing Learning and Assessment Guides for each unit of study. The Learning and Assessment Guides have been written especially for the hospital pharmacy environment by our team of hospital pharmacists and educational designers. They contain current and relevant information and learning activities that support the application of theory into work place practice. Workplace mentors will also receive a Mentors Folder containing the Learning and Assessment Guides and information specific to mentoring the learner in each unit of study.
     

Learning facilitators

This qualification is delivered by a team of qualified and knowledgeable pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and academics, who have extensive hospital pharmacy experience in a range of settings.

Our learning facilitators have expertise in coordinating and facilitating distance-based learning.

 

Credit transfer

Credit transfer will be given for units listed on Statements of Attainment issued by Registered Training Organisation that carry the same code and name as that listed for the qualification.

 

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

RPL is a process to acknowledge learners’ existing skills and knowledge relevant to individual units in the qualification. Learners applying for RPL will be required to provide evidence of current competence, including recent pharmacy experience, relevant to the performance criteria of the unit/s for which recognition is sought. The learning facilitator will provide guidance to assist in the recognition process. RPL is awarded for whole units only.
