Question 2 Interpreting the article (5 marks)
Wajs-Chaczko writes about the values and expectations of the next generation of emergency managers. How are the initiatives outlined in the article designed to address this issue? Support your answer with references to the article and your own understanding.
Question 3 Opinion and application
There are two parts to this question. Make sure you complete both parts.
Part A (5 marks)
Employee expectations
How could the NSW FB implement or take into account Wajs-Chaczko’s suggestions? Have adjustments already been made? Do you agree with the idea that changes should be made to accommodate Gen Y?
Part B (5 marks)
Community expectations
The concept of the ‘Risk Society’ means placing greater emphasis on the risk generated through human activity than the risk associated with ‘natural’ hazards. Wajs-Chaczko (2008) writes:
…clearly the community expectations of the emergency management sector to investigate ‘manufactured risks’, and their implications, will increase and the sector should pre-empt this expectation (p. 60).
What is your opinion in relation to increasing the importance of human-generated ‘manufactured’ risk and lessening the focus on ‘natural’ hazards? Should the sector “pre-empt this expectation”? Why or why not?
