Bio
A/Professor Karl Roberts is a United Kingdom State Registered Forensic Psychologist, a Chartered Forensic Psychologist of the British Psychological Society, a Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy and a United Kingdom Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) Approved Behavioural Investigative Advisor (BIA). He has worked closely with police since 1992 providing investigative behavioural advice in the form of risk assessments, interview strategies and offender profiles. Since 1992 he has advised on in excess of four hundred major Police inquires throughout the United Kingdom, Europe and the USA.
Karl is heavily involved in Police training contributing to advanced interview (suspect and witness) police interview training, interview manager/advisor training, sex crime investigator training and risk management training to Police forces throughout Australia, USA and the United Kingdom. He is also involved in the design of national Police training in the United Kingdom being a member of the design team for the UK National Interview Advisor’s course and Advanced Interviewing Courses. He was also part of the design team and contributes to the United Kingdom Counter Terrorism investigation course.
Karl’s areas of expertise are investigative interviewing and risk assessment with a focus upon Terrorism, stalking and sex crimes. One area of particular interest is the impact of the psychological characteristics of suspects and witnesses upon the interview process and how interviewers manage issues of vulnerability such as mental illness and personality disorders. Another focus of research is upon the design of psychologically informed and empirically validated risk assessment methods for use in counter terrorism and stalking.
At CSU Karl is responsible for the development of CSU programs within the United Kingdom. He also has teaching responsibility for two courses, Psychological vulnerability, victims of crime and Police Investigations, and Police Investigations and Forensic Psychology and is involved in the Doctoral policing programmes. He also contributes to advanced interview training, interview management and counter terrorism short courses provided by CSU to Australian and other Police forces.
