Case study: Newspaper exercise

In this quick exercise participants were required to build a visual image onto the body of one person in their group, using only newspaper and tape. Each group was allocated one of the following to build: Stag/ Christmas beetle, racing driver in a car, Mount Panorama, beer bottle, or a satellite dish. Groups had 20 minutes to work on their constructions.

Materials:

Newspaper
Sticky tape / masking tape

These car wheels have been made out of rolled up newspaper pages, stuck together with sticky tape.
This car frame was built using rolled up newspaper and tape.
This performer is wearing a newspaper car frame attached to a backpack made out of newspaper rolls.
Rolled newspaper created these "toes".
When complete the performers paraded before the crowd.
Music accompanied the parade.

Notes:

Make sure the performer can still see from inside the costume, and can still move about. Incorporating movement in the costume gives performance possibilities. Allow time to try out movements.
