The practical work involved in devising celebrations requires the occupational health and safety practices associated with the visual and performing arts. Always put safety first.

Masqued/Masked Ball

Ideal:
A celebration in which everyone is given licence to perform and be a character.

Principles:

  • A 2-3 hour evening event with costume, mask, music, food, prizes, dancing and performance.
  • A designed reception area and event.
  • Processional food - have a performance surrounding the arrival and presentation of food.
  • Selection of the Queen/ Clown Prince of the Ball.
  • Performance and music to move the evening through the stages of reception, mingling, entrees, dancing, main course, prize giving (best or worst mask, costume, dancer, exotic eater).
  • Masquerade procession of the masked costumes past the Queen/Clown prince.
  • Anti-masque - mummer's show parody performance.
  • Counterpoint/contrast images, colours, lights, music, etc.
  • Finale.

Practices:

  • Design a space using whatever is available or specially made.
  • Lanterns, banners, giant images, shadow puppets.
  • Contrasting bands.
  • Social and progressive dancing to encourage mingling.
  • Use coloured lights to create dynamic warm/cool atmospheres.
  • Safe and hygienic handling of food and drink must conform to industry and legal standards. Ensure all crew, performers and spectators are safe and operating safely at all times.
