Australia’s internationally awarded Advertising courses
What makes CSU and our Bachelor of Communication (Advertising) and Advertising / Marketing double degree courses the pre-eminent communication courses in Australia is not simply the numerous national and international awards our students have won. It is our singular focus and dedication to preparing you for a career in your chosen profession. Everything we teach and everything you learn is focused on ensuring that when you leave CSU you are industry ready to literally ‘hit the ground running’ in an advertising or media agency or marketing company. Not surprisingly, our graduates are in demand by the advertising industry, with an exceptionally high employment rate.
The Advertising and Advertising / Marketing courses at CSU are vocationally focused. Learning and teaching is based on acknowledged and absolutely current industry practice and is designed to provide you with a local and global communications perspective. As such they equip you with the research, analytical, strategic, conceptual, creative, and interpersonal skills to be effective, employable and ultimately successful in the competitive world of marketing communications. These courses are among a select few in Australia to be accredited by the International Advertising Association (IAA). Successful completion of these courses entitles you to the internationally recognised IAA Diploma in Marketing Communications with your CSU degree.
Professional teaching young professionals
You come to CSU as a student. You leave as a young professional. Our courses are lead and taught by professionals from the communication industry, with the full support of the industry. Associate Professor Rod McCulloch is Head of the School of Communication and Course Coordinator for the Advertising and Advertising / Marketing courses and works with Advertising lecturers Brett Van Heekeren, David Maxwell, Anne Llewellynn and Fiona Green to provide students with both essential academic knowledge as well as contemporary industry and practitioner skills.
Come to CSU and come to work in Kajulu
Kajulu Communications is the internationally awarded on-campus student advertising agency of Charles Sturt University. The word Kajulu means ‘to look ahead’. Since its inception Kajulu has become a model and a bench-mark for innovative teaching and learning strategies. However, whilst other institutions have attempted to emulate the concept, none have enjoyed the success or earned the accolades that we have. Kajulu replicates a real advertising agency in every way, from systems, procedures and responsibilities, to student roles and outcomes – from client briefs to the development and presentation of industry-standard integrated marketing communication campaigns. And, in more and more instances, campaigns that are actually going to market. Final year students leave the traditional lecture halls and tutorial rooms behind as they work almost exclusively in the agency environment of Kajulu, in effect completing a full year’s practical ‘internship’ whilst still at university.
Kajulu Clients
Kajulu students have worked on campaigns for regional, national and international companies. Clients are many and varied and include international companies and brands such as Compaq Computers, Visa Card and Unilever (Lynx Men’s Grooming Products), national brands and products including Lion Nathan Breweries, Electrolux Home Appliances, Arnott’s Biscuits, Sony Audio and Estee Lauder, as well as charity and not-for-profit organisations including the National Heart Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, The United Nations, Foodbank and the Royal Flying Doctor Service, to name but a few.
Australia’s most Awarded
Proof of the success of our teaching and learning strategies lays with the students themselves, their awards and their achievements. We are the most internationally awarded IAA-accredited University in Australia. We have won the prestigious IAA InterAd World Advertising Championship three times in the last 8 years (in 1999, 2002 and 2005), from a global field of tertiary education institutions, and have been Asia/Pacific Champions on two other occasions. In Australia we have won the IAA Big Idea National Advertising Competition five times since its instigation in 2003. A campaign created by a Kajulu team for the international charity organisation Habitat for Humanity was selected for national exposure in the Australian marketplace. In other words, you are joining illustrious company, winners in every sense of the word.
Industry Internships
As a mandatory component of your course, in your final year you will complete a 4 week intensive internship (not work experience!) in an advertising or media agency or marketing company. Internships are carefully managed to ensure that you are able to put the by now well-honed practical skills developed in Kajulu to productive use. Overseas internships to destinations such as North America, the UK and SE Asia may also be offered competitively. Past internships have seen students working from 3 and 6 months in major international agencies in cities as diverse as New York and Kuala Lumpur.
Australia’s most Wanted.
You arrive as students, young adults. Our goal is to see you leave as young professionals. Graduates of the Advertising and Advertising/Marketing double degree courses join IMC, creative, direct response, media agencies, sales promotion and marketing companies in planning, client service, creative, production and media roles. Regardless of your eventual role, CSU and Kajulu students are amongst the most wanted graduates in Australia.
“Keep teaching these young people of the future to the current high level, and we’ll keep employing them.” Allan Griffiths, Business Director Media Federation of Australia
