Bio

Brett is the Course Co-ordinator for the BA Communication (Commercial Radio) and lecturer in Advertising. Brett has over a decade of experience in the media as a producer of programs and a marketer of media organizations. Prior to becoming an academic Brett ran his own communication consultancy “Media Allsorts” which provided both creative and strategic services to clients. Brett has been a member of the advertising teaching staff at CSU since 1998. In 2002 he was the recipient of the global IAA Harrison Award for excellence in teaching and in 2008 received an ALTC Citation for outstanding contribution to student learning. In 2004 Brett published his first book titled “Advertising Ethics”, through Pearson Ed publications, New York and has research interests in “professional and practice-based learning” practices and the role of intimate communication tactics – such as podcasting – as an education tool.

Research

Brett’s research interests include:
• Podcasting - the new wave of narrowcasting and on-demand services that are dramatically influencing the nature of person-to-person communication. I am also interested in this phenomena's application in other potential environments such as education;
• Industry/University partnered curriculum - I am interested in the education environments and outcomes that are developed by collaborative industry/educator programmes. These programs are founded in the pedagogical principles of situated learning and cognitive apprenticeships.
• The Scholarship of Professional and Practice-Based Learning – in particular its connection with the broader based concepts of ‘Situated Learning’, Experiential Learning and Work-Integrated Learning.

Teaching

Brett teaches across the disciplines of Advertising and Commercial Radio in particular the Advertising Creative Process, Advertising Principles, and the Promotions Management process for media.

Teaching Awards include:
International
2002 International Advertising Association Harrison Award for Excellence in teaching.
National
2008 Australian Learning and Teaching Council Citation for outstanding contributions to student learning.

Brett’s citation was titled: “sustained innovation and dedication to university teaching using situated learning strategies to enhance learning and produce significant graduate outcomes in radio and advertising.”
