Profile

Bruce Gater’s career spans over a quarter of a century working in television production, specialising in producing, directing, camera, editing and production management.

In 2002 he joined the lecturing staff at Charles Sturt University, Wagga Wagga. After completing his degree, Bruce enrolled in a Master of Visual and Performing Arts, which is due for completion later this year. The degree explores the contradictory study of reality and expressionism in film and television in conjunction with the interpretation of film language. He also completed a Graduate Certificate in University Learning and Teaching in 2008. Bruce is chair of the School’s Teaching and Learning Committee and sits on the School Board, the Research/Professional Practice, Postgraduate Studies and Ethics Committee and the Faculty Teaching and Learning Committee.

Research

Bruce is currently working on a collaborative research project with Dr Richard Zu from Bathurst campus, studying the applications of artificial intelligence and video cameras. He is also completing a documentary that explores the conflict between mechanical reproduction and visual communication artists. Future research projects for Bruce lie in the area of producing an oral history of the early years of Australian television production.
