John Saunders is a theatre director, actor and director. He has worked in professional stage, film and television industries for over twenty years. He began his career as a Company Actor with the State Theatre Company of South Australia, and has acted in numerous classical and contemporary plays. John performed in, and toured nationally with, the original Australian musical theatre productions of Barnum and The Littler Shop of Horrors.
John has been the Artistic Director of three theatre companies, Acting Out (now Barking Gecko W.A.), The Western Australian Theatre Company and the Riverina Theatre Company. During that time, he directed many productions of classical and contemporary dramas and comedies, new Australian works, cabaret, musicals, circus and large-scale community events.
John is the director of the Australian production of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare Abridged, which has played for several sell-out seasons at the Sydney Opera House, and tours frequently throughout Australia and Asia.
John has lectured and directed at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) and at Charles Sturt University. From 2003-2007, John was the inaugural Head of Performance Studies at N.I.C.A. (the National Institute of Circus Arts) where he directed My Secret Circus, Inferno and the graduating students’ 2006 and 2007 Showcases.
John lectures in the Bachelor of Arts (Acting for Screen and Stage), and is the Subject Co-ordinator of all acting subjects. He also supervises candidates in the Master of Arts Practice program.
John’s research interests include the investigation of stage adaptations as an area of research into scholarship of teaching and to develop further adaptations as creative works research.
