Hazards, Disasters and Survival

A booklet for Students and the Community

HAZARDS, DISASTERS AND SURVIVAL

FOREWORD

Emergency Management Australia (EMA) and related organisations in the eight states/territories receive many requests from the public, particularly students and teachers, seeking information on a wide range hazards and disasters, both in Australia and overseas. This booklet will be of assistance in answering many of those questions including vital ones about survival through prevention, risk reduction and preparedness.

Enquiries are also received about Australia’s emergency/disaster management arrangements and the integral role of EMA and the various state/territory emergency management authorities.. Therefore a summary of this information is included in Chapter 1.

Information contained in this booklet was researched, written and prepared for publication by EMA’s Disaster Awareness Program from our own and various other sources including the authorities acknowledged (opposite) and was incorporated into the publication in consultation with a practising secondary school teacher.

Although secondary school students are the primary target audience of this book, it is also intended as a comprehensive reference for the whole community in the interests of public safety and community awareness and education.

For more detailed, specific information (except about fires"), ask your State/Territory Emergency Service (S/TES) for the EMA poster map of ‘Australia’s Natural Hazard Zones’ and for individual pamphlets or booklets on the hazards that may concern or affect you, including class sets and teachers kits for schools.. Postal addresses appear below. *(More detailed fire information can be obtained through your local fire service).

EMA also publishes and distributes a 120 page book called ‘Hazard-Wise’. It is specifically designed as a geography/science teachers’ preparational and classroom source, and complements this students’ booklet.
