Courses

A range of undergraduate and post-graduate studies are available and these may be studied on campus in full-time mode or part-time mode or they may be studied in Distance Education mode.

Psychology Courses at CSU

There are three undergraduate courses at CSU which can provide a basis for a career in psychology and related areas - the Bachelor of Arts, the Bachelor of Social Science (Psychology) and the Bachelor of Psychology.

The Bachelor of Psychology is a four-year course and successful completion of this course will satisfy the academic requirements for registration as a psychologist in NSW (two years of supervised experience would still be required). The number of places in this course are limited and the UAI (or equivalent) required for entry is high. The Bachelor of Psychology is offered on campus at Bathurst and by distance education. Students who meet certain eligibility criteria may apply to transfer to the Honours stream.

The Bachelor of Social Science (Psychology) and the Bachelor of Arts are three-year courses and provide the foundation for fourth-year psychology courses. The Bachelor of Social Science (Psychology) allows a greater degree of specialisation in psychology. Students in the Bachelor of Social Science (Psychology) who meet certain eligibility criteria in third year will be eligible to transfer to the Bachelor of Psychology or Bachelor of Psychology (Hons) .

Students have to take a minimum of 13 psychology subjects but may take up to 18 subjects in psychology. They also take two compulsory subjects from sociology and do a minor of six subjects. This minor is often of an applied nature, e.g. Welfare, Human Resources Management. The Bachelor of Arts course provides a broader education.

In the Bachelor of Arts, students who wish to do a fourth year in Psychology must do a minimum of 10 psychology subjects and may take up to 13 subjects in psychology as well as a major or minors in other disciplines within the Faculty of Arts.

The Bachelor of Arts is offered on campus at Wagga Wagga and the Bachelor of Social Science (Psychology) on campus at Bathurst. Both courses are also offered by distance education.

People who already have a degree but who wish to obtain the equivalent of a three-year undergraduate psychology qualification can enrol in the Graduate Diploma of Psychology. This is a two-year part-time course offered by distance education in which students study second and third year psychology subjects.

Students who do well in either the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Social Science (Psychology) or Graduate Diploma of Psychology courses can apply to do an accredited fourth-year Honours or Postgraduate program which will satisfy the academic requirements for registration.

There are three such courses at CSU - the Bachelor of Arts (Honours), the Bachelor of Social Science (Psychology) (Honours) and the Postgraduate Diploma of Psychology. The Bachelor of Social Science (Psychology)(Hons) is offered by distance education with residential schools held on the Bathurst Campus. The Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in psychology is only offered on campus at Wagga Wagga. The course content of the Bachelor of Arts(Hons) is the same as the Bachelor of Social Science (Psychology) (Hons). Some subjects in the BA (Hons) are not offered on campus at Wagga Wagga. Students who enrol in these subjects study them in the distance mode and will have to attend residential schools on the Bathurst Campus. The Postgraduate Diploma of Psychology is an accredited fourth-year course which has a slightly more applied focus that the Honours courses. It is offered by distance education at Bathurst and on campus at Wagga Wagga. Students enrolled part-time in the Postgraduate Diploma of Psychology may apply to transfer to the Bachelor of Social Science (Psychology)(Hons) subject to meeting certain eligibility criteria.
