2007 Lee Lin Chin Competition
Jewellery can be a sublime and powerful form of communication. It shares the same creative potentials as all other artistic mediums yet its natural habitat is the body not a wall. It has a long history in all cultures. The materials used range from the precious to the found. So it is important that a jeweller has the ability to design and manufacture pieces for a diverse range of contexts.
In this assignment students were required to design work for Lee Lin Chin (SBS World News Australia weekend presenter). Ms Chin is widely recognised as a patron and advocate of the fashion design industry. This task for students was to develop a piece to complement Ms Chin’s fashion sensibility.
This challenge places constraints on the students who are bound by limiting criteria that arise when designing and manufacturing work for a specific individual. Students need to find a balance between the requirements of the client and their own emerging style. This is an essential skill when undertaking any commission work, be it for a recognised media personality or otherwise.
