Sabine Pagan is the Course Coordinator in Jewellery Design and Manufacture in the School of Visual and Performing Arts, a unique degree program in Australia. Sabine is currently undertaking a Master by Research in the School of Architecture and Design at UniSA. She offers students her wealth of experience in both trade and contemporary jewellery practice. Sabine’s specialised jewellery design and manufacturing skills are the product of both apprenticeship and formal Tertiary Design training that she undertook in Switzerland prior to immigrating to Australia .
Sabine is exhaustive in her dedication to guide students in their development of fundamental manufacturing skills while facilitating their ability in undertaking design development on an individual basis within most projects. Sabine’s philosophy is “to assist students to develop the skills required for undertaking all trade based tasks with confidence and professionalism, while driving students to develop the capacity to create designs that challenge, invigorate and extend the industry.” Pagan worked as a Freelance Jeweller in Europe for several years before relocating to Australia in 1998, where her practice underwent a dramatic shift. Challenged by a new culture with different values and an industry in stark contrast to her formative experience in Switzerland , she was motivated to examine how a sustainable career in the trade may be achieved in the Australian Industry. She was awarded a 3-year residency at the elite Object Studios in Sydney and continued to develop her business and profile in Canberra at ANCA (Australian National Capital Artists) Studios .
Sabine quickly established her own profile by making contemporary jewellery using strong skill-based techniques. An additional element of her practice involved supplying a production range to retail outlets across the nation while maintaining a client and commission profile. Commission work led Sabine to broaden her creative practice beyond the scale of jewellery work. Her collaboration with the advertising industry to contribute to the realisation of a series of ad campaigns including “Absolut Vodka” and “Singapore Airlines” initiated Sabine’s new interest in alternative ways of making. This experience influenced Sabine to rethink her motives behind jewellery making. Designing was no longer restricted by scale. She has since created a series of works derived from jewellery ideas but changed into functional objects during design development. Sabine’s diverse practice provides students with an insight of the vast possibilities in a jeweller’s career. Her aim as a Lecturer is “to be able to pass on my knowledge to support and facilitate the development of students’ aspirations as jewellers”.
