Jane Bowden - Artist Statement

Jane Bowden JewelleryAs a full time jewellery maker my practice is predominantly commissions for one off pieces, engagement rings, gifts and commemorative objects as well as work created for international and national exhibitions.

Some of these exhibitions include 'art for the ear' in the (USA 2003) 'Ritual of tea' (JamFactory 2002) and Electrum's Christmas exhibition (UK 2002).

Most recently my work has been featured in the book '1000 rings' published last year by Lark Books.

The work for my exhibition pieces centers around the process of applying textile techniques to metal, a process inspired by the important jewellery artist, Arline Fisch. I have however, attempted to extend the process to incorporate other materials, such as, seeds and gemstones, combining woven metal with hand wrought metal in jewellery and objects.

As a founding member of Zu design – jewellery + objects, an artist run workshop and gallery in the heritage listed Gays Arcade that represents over 60 Australian and international jewellery artists, I am passionate about interpreting the needs of my clients and creating pieces for them. This gives me the opportunity to extend my designs to match my client’s needs.

Designing and making one off pieces for exhibitions gives me great freedom of expression. Ultimately I just love working with metal.
