Bio
Career Summary
Jamie has a degree in Visual Arts, majoring in photography, from Sydney College of the Arts (Sydney University), and completed post-graduate studies in Art/Photography at the University of Newcastle. He is currently undertaking a PhD in fine art photography. In 1996 Jamie was appointed Honorary Visiting Academic to the Centre for Electronic Art at the University of Middlesex in London, returning to CSU as co-founder of the then Multimedia and Photo-Imaging discipline. He subsequently developed and implemented the BA (Photography), introduced on the Wagga Wagga campus in 2006.
Jamie is a practicing exhibiting artist, with numerous solo and group shows, and has concurrently gained extensive experience in the professional photographic arena. It is this hybrid professional background that has underpinned his teaching strategies in the Photography program at Wagga Wagga. He states, “Regardless of the area in which I am working, it is the context of the work that matters to me. It must permit critical contemplation, allowing an active interaction, stimulating our minds to reflect and ponder on what we have seen.”
Research Interests
Jamie’s research is focused in the field of fine art photography. His current PhD project features the concept of melancholy in the photograph through an investigation of the life cycle of the regional urban landscape and its surrounding rural environment.
Jamie’s on-going professional practice and activities in industrial, commercial and corporate photography and digital imaging informs the applied/professional side of his teaching.
Teaching
Jamie lectures in Photography and Digital Imaging, and is Course Coordinator of the BA (Photography) degree based at the Wagga Wagga campus. He teaches students in the BA (Photography) and also teaches photography to students from numerous other courses as part of the inter-disciplinary minor elective program. Jamie also supervises Master of Arts Practice students in the Photomedia specialisation.
