Factors Influencing the Success of Private and Community Owned Indigenous Business Across Remote, Regional and Urban Australia

This research project investigates the Indigenous entrepreneurship in Australia. On completion, it will provide the strengthened research base necessary to enhance the development of evidence based strategies which can improve the uptake rate and success of Indigenous Enterprises. The project collects qualitative and quantitative information from primary sources about the current types of Indigenous enterprises, factors influencing their success, and programs that could be provided to assist with their establishment and development. From urban, regional and remote locations of five states and two territories the project has already collected detailed qualitative information on 40 Indigenous businesses; and presently in the process of collecting quantitative information on another 500 Indigenous businesses in Australia.

Labour Market Dimensions of the Central-West Region in NSW

The project provides a comparative and critical analysis of the principal factors influencing local labour markets in Australia with particular focus on regions. Different segments of this project examine the factors influencing labour market outcomes in regional labour markets in comparison to large metropolitan cities; the relative performance of the Central West regional labour market in attaining full employment and to establish causal relationships between employment and socio-economic variables; critical evaluation of regional industry specialisation etc.

RENWELD: An Emerging Regional Engineering Business Network

This project intends to study the governance, structure and business operations of an industry network in central western NSW, RENWELD in Orange. It aims to recommend the future structure of the RENWELD. The research design is action research using interviews and workshops to collect data from key stakeholders and using that data to develop recommendations for approval by the RENWELD group.

New Immigrants Improving Productivity in Australian Agriculture

This research project aims to investigate the experiences of immigrant farmers, growers and labourers in order to understand the ways that immigrants improve agricultural productivity in Australia. The project intend to suggest policy recommendations to improve the attraction and retention of immigrant agricultural producers and to improve the fit between WHMs and seasonal labour demand in the agricultural sector.

Small Business Performance (SBP) Model

The project plans to develop and empirically test a small business performance (SBP) model. Antecedents include business life cycle and owner characteristics (locus of control, self-efficacy). Business performance will be measured by financial measures (profitability and growth), as well as subjective success factors as perceived by the operator.

Regional Nursing Labour Market Study

Provides an understanding of the reason for shortages within different areas of nursing in regional areas, including hospital and aged care services. The specific focus is on how work related issues are causing nurses to leave this market.

New Immigrants in the ‘Bush’

This research project provided a comprehensive analysis of the immigrants in regional and rural Australia. The national survey of 1,000 immigrants (carried out for the first time) provided an overview of the factors of attraction and retention of new immigrants in regional and rural Australia. The survey explored the skills and qualifications of the immigrants, their employment and settlement experience and satisfaction with the services.
