About The Centre for Indigenous Studies, Dubbo

Established 2007

The Centre for Indigenous Studies (CIS) is a new Centre established in early 2007. The CIS is responsible for the delivery and governance of Indigenous education and research at Charles Sturt University (CSU).

The CIS is located in the Faculty of Education and housed at the Dubbo Campus of CSU. The establishment of CIS will move the University toward developing a hub of Indigenous Education at its Dubbo campus and enhance the interactive learning environment currently in focus at Dubbo. With a high percentage of the Indigenous population in Western NSW dispersed throughout the Dubbo region, the location of the CIS in Dubbo is envisaged to be situated ideally to reach out to more Indigenous students in an attempt to increase the number of Indigenous students participating in higher education.

The first Director of CIS, Mr Gary Shipp, was appointed January 2007. An Indigenous man from Wiradjuri country, joined CSU after a successful career at the Australian National University.

Wendy Nolan commenced with CIS in May 2007 after a rewarding career with the University of South Australia. She is currently the Acting Director of CIS. Wendy's appointment was followed by the appointment of an Executive Officer, Administration Assistant and a Community Consultant. The Centre also employs an Indigenous Lecturer and an Indigenous Associate Lecturer.

The CIS is now staffed by both Academic and Administrative staff to meet the goals of both the development of an Indigenous Education Strategy and monitoring of Indigenous education initiatives at CSU. CSU recognises that the contribution of teaching, research and learning of Indigenous education is critical in an attempt to reaffirming its leadership role within higher education across the nation and its region.
