Barry Cocklin
Following the completion of a BSc at Otago University , major in Zoology, I undertook pre-service teacher education at Christchurch Teachers College in New Zealand . This was followed by, first, a 3 year secondary school teaching position in Christchurch , then a further 10 in Gisborne, teaching Science, and senior Biology. Towards the latter stages of this teaching career, I undertook a BEd by external study - a process which I hope gives me some insight into the ‘joys’ of teaching full-time, managing a boarding hostel, and coping with two small children, while studying. To complete the BEd , I needed a year full-time study at the Massey University, so had to resign from teaching as the University was also strongly suggesting I went on to postgraduate study. From 1980 to 1986 I worked at Massey University while also completing post-graduate studies, a Masterate in 1982, and finally a Ph.D completed in 1989. When looking around for a tertiary career, my supervisor (An Australian) suggested I look here for a position, so I applied and took up a position at Newcastle University in 1987. This was followed by a move to CSU-R in 1990, where I have been ever since. In those ‘spare’ moments, I enjoy spending time with family and doing photography.
My particular interests derive from the broad area of Sociology of Education, including issues of gender in education, Professional Development for teachers, Educational Administration and Leadership, Educational Policy, and research methods. Recent research has included: Women Principals, Rural Women Teachers, Workplace Learning in the Professional Development of Teachers, Outcome-based Education, ‘The School as a Learning Community’, and School Leadership.
