Dr Tamsin Meaney
In the last twenty five years, I have taught in a number of different situations from TAFE to urban primary schools, to remote Indigenous communities. I have taught preschoolers through to university students mathematics (amongst other things). I have considerable interest in the role that language plays in the teaching and learning of mathematics.
More recently I have worked in teacher education in New Zealand before moving back to Australia in February, 2008.
I have been researching issues to do with language and mathematics for the last 20 years. My main interest has been in the use of Indigenous languages in the teaching and learning of mathematics. In the last four years this has involved working with the staff at a Maori immersion school in New Zealand. I have also been interested in the development of culturally appropriate mathematics curriculum and the acquisition of the mathematics register by first language speakers. All the work has centred around concerns for a more social just teaching and learning environment in schools.
Mathematics Teacher Education Pedagogy for primary schools.
I am on the editorial board of two journals: Mathematics Education Research Journal and Mathematics and Culture.
I have been a member of the Mathematics Education research Group of Australasia since 1995.
