Middle School Symposium held everyyear at the beginning of O-Week

This is the 2006 symposium. The symposium has a significant involvement of pre-service teachers from the middle school degree involved in the organisation and presentation.

 

 

 

 

 

Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

My main goals of teaching are to foster within individuals the knowledge, skills and confidence required to meet the challenges of learning that exist within a range educationalcontexts. I seek to develop creative and critical thinkers who possess a desirefor learning; competencies, attentiveness and self-assurance on which to base their own philosophy.

Subjects I teach

EED114 Transitions in Middle Schooling - This subject focuses on the physical, emotional, social and cultural aspects of early adolescence and the associated implications in the context ofeducation. Emphasis is given to issues relating to puberty, gender, and health with attention given to factors which influence adolescents' understanding ofself. The pedagogical implications of these adolescent experiences will be explored from physical, social and cultural perspectives. Assessment items inthis subject are presentation and exam.

EPT208 Middle Schooling Pedagogy in Practice- This subject examines the nature of mandatory and non-mandatory curriculum models of teaching and learning, and frameworks for planning in primary and secondary schools and explores the contemporary debate around these. Students will utilise the knowledge and experience they have gained in the first two years of the course to further develop their skills in observing learner needsand abilities and planning for their development. Students will evaluate, deviseand utilise appropriate teaching strategies and resources and be introduced toappropriate pedagogy for Indigenous Australian Studies and learning practices for the benefit of all children. At the conclusion of this four week professional experience placement students will be provided with the opportunity to apply this learning in upper primary (Years 3-6) and secondary settings(Years 7-10). Assessment items in this subject are classroom management essayand journal or e-journal based on the NSW or Victorian Institute Teaching Standards. This subject also has an excursion to a school which operates a middle school program.

EPT310 Professional Experience in Community & Culture- This subject focuses on professional experience which will occur indiverse settings and involve interaction with adolescents in a variety of ways,adopting a range of roles and responsibilities in communities beyond formal schooling. Pre service teachers will be placed in agencies, services andinstitutions including: youth refuges, youth counselling services, crisiscentres, youth correctional centres, health and welfare services, and youth development associations. The purpose of this professional placement is to provide pre-service teachers with opportunities to work with adolescents during times of crisis and growth in diverse settings. This subject also involves a 3 week placement in a secondary school undertaking supervised teaching with high school students (Years 7-12). Assessment items in this subject are lesson planning based on senior syllabus and journal or e-journal based on the NSW Victorian Institute Teaching Standards.

EER407 The ReflectiveEducator - This subject considers arange of approaches which are used in research relating to middle schooling, children, young adolescents and their families. Students will develop theirabilities to read and critically evaluate research and question the reasons why certain topics in middle school are the subject of research and certain others are not. The compilation of literature review forms a major part of this subject.

EPT412 – ProfessionalExperience: K/P-12 This subject prepares the pre-service teacher in the final year of their course and for work in a school for 10 weeks. This provides an opportunity to reflect on the work of a middle school educator within the context of a school community. During this 10 week professional experiencepre-service teacher will be members of staff in this setting and will be responsible for groups of young people with whom they work as an associate teacher. Pre-service teachers will reflect on their developing profile as an educator and evaluate the contribution of this extended experience to their professional growth.
