Best Buddies and You!

Best Buddies logoExpand your education by getting first hand experience in leadership and community development. Obtain valuable volunteer experience and learn life lessons.

Best Buddies is a friendship program, matching student volunteers and individuals with intellectual disabilities. Through these one-on-one matches, friendships develop and the participants learn about the importance of community involvement and inclusion.

Matches spend time together doing things that friends would normally do – talking about their day, going for coffee, watching movies, playing sports… whatever they both enjoy! And the entire group gets together for fun activities.

Working with Community Living Burlington, Charles Sturt University is excited to present this exciting opportunity to its students for the first time.

For more information, download the brochure (2.7Mb PDF) or check out the Best Buddies web site and be sure to attend our information session early in September.

Police Record Check

To be able to undertake the Bachelor of Primary Education Studies program, and successfully complete the practicum component in the schools, you are required by law to have a satisfactory Police Record Check prior to having direct contact with students and other vulnerable persons.

To obtain the necessary information and request a Police Record Check, go to the Ontario Education Services Corporation (OESC) website.

READ the information regarding Police Record Check services, and how to apply. Click on the link for a College or University Student who needs an OESC ID Card for a placement in a school or other agency. READ the instructions carefully and download the relevant Consent & Payment forms.

Complete the Consent & Payment forms immediately and send them with your payment to the OESC in Toronto, as instructed on the forms. The cost associated with this service and any appeals are to be borne by the applicant.

If your Police Record Check is satisfactory you will be issued with a wallet-sized Identification Card, allowing you to be placed in schools for the purpose of practicum.

You must provide a photocopy of the OESC Identification Card to the University by July 30, 2009. Fax to the Ontario campus on 905 333 6562.

NOTE: you cannot attend your school placement until confirmation of a satisfactory Police Record Check has been received.

The Bachelor of Primary Education Studies program is offered under the written consent of the Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities for the period from 24th December 2004 to 24th December 2009. The Minister has extended this consent until such time as the University’s application for renewal of consent is determined. Prospective students are responsible for satisfying themselves that the programs and the degrees will be appropriate to their needs (e.g. acceptable to potential employers, professional licensing bodies or other educational institutions).
