The Bachelor of Primary Education is a one–year teacher education program that prepares teachers to teach in primary–junior (JK–6) classrooms in Ontario. As with other Ontario Faculties of Education, this is a one–year professional preparation program and all applicants must be graduates of a 3 or 4 year University program.
The degree comprises ten equally weighted courses across a one year program. Six courses have a direct curriculum focus while the remaining four courses are foundation based. All ten of these courses are linked to theoretical constructs in substantive ways. Two of the foundation courses are structured around a problem-based learning model and include a ‘block’ practicum experience in primary/junior classes. Specifically, the degree contains:
6 Curriculum courses : Language and Literacy, Mathematics, Personal Development/Health/Physical Education, The Arts, Science & Technology, Social Studies
2 Foundation courses : Foundation I: Child Development/Classroom Management; Foundation III: Compulsory/Inclusive Education (School Law)
2 Foundation/Practicum courses : Problem–based learning. Students develop portfolios and integrated units of work comprising evidence of curriculum planning, formal assessment, evaluation, personal reflection, and the development of rich learning tasks and authentic assessment. Each of the two courses will have a special focus directly linked to the practicum blocks. Foundations II: Practicum Seminar will be directed toward the rights and responsibilities of teachers, issues associated with assessment, and lesson planning. Foundations IV: Practicum Seminar will focus on the development of literacy and mathematics concepts within and across other curriculum areas, and the development of integrated lesson and unit plans that include adaptations and modifications that reflect a clear understanding of a full range of diversity.
Students will have the opportunity to take a Catholic Education religion course, and may also be able to take online electives from CSU's distance education program.
This program is offered under the written consent of the Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities for the period from 24 th December 2004 to 24 th December 2009 . Prospective students are responsible for satisfying themselves that the program and the degree will be appropriate to their needs (e.g., acceptable to potential employers, professional licensing bodies or other educational institutions).
