Faculty Research Program Fund (revised Research Development Fund)

The Research Program Fund will be expended on research programs and research development in keeping with the Faculty's Research Strategy.

2012 Applications close 31st May 2012

The Research Program Fund will provide a mechanism by which senior and mid career researchers can propose a research program that enables early career researchers to connect and be mentored more directly in all aspects of the research process, including budgets and employment of casual assistance.

Calls for applications to the fund will be made annually - usually in June - and will be made via the Faculty's Research Bulletin.

Applicants should make a detailed statement of claims as outlined in the Guidelines, and use the Research Program Funding Budget document to provide detailed information regarding the budget of the research program.

Mid-Career Researcher Support Scheme

In line with the Faculty  Research and Compacts Strategy, the Faculty will support Mid-Career Researchers  in the development and submission of grants (Category 3). Individuals or teams  are eligible to apply and should meet the Faculty criteria for Mid-career  researchers.

For the purposes of this award the following definitions will apply:

  1. An Early Career  Researcher is someone within 5 years of graduating with their Doctorate or in  first 5 years of an academic appointment.
  2. A Mid Career  Researcher is someone within 5 – 10 years of graduating with their doctorate or  with the equivalent length of research experience and has a track record of an  average of one HERDC recorded publication per year.
  3. A Senior  Researcher is someone who graduated with their doctorate more than 10 years ago  or has an equivalent length of research experience and has a track record of an  average of one HERDC recorded publication per year.

Researchers must identify a grant agency, philanthropic organisation or similar and outline the following  in no more than 1 page (excluding track record and references). The outcome of  this scheme is the successful submission of a proposal to an external funding organisation.

  1. Grant agency or  organisation. Include a description of their aim and past support for your discipline  if available;
  2. Amount of funding that you intend to  request and a short overview of how it will be used;
  3. The funding  requested under the Faculty scheme (up to $5,000) and its purpose. For example, time  release for writing and submission; assistance from experts/mentors, travel for  meetings. In essence, what the funds will be used for in order for successful  submission of the proposal. Note that it would be expected that the requested  funds from the funding organisation would be greater than the funds requested  from the Faculty for support;
  4. The timeline for  submission and approval from the Head of School. Submission to this scheme  should normally be within 6 months of the external due date. Note, that  submission of the grant application will eventually need to be approved and  signed off by the DVC(Research) through the University Research Office.

Category 3 grants include (as  defined in the DIISR&TE  HERDC specifications):

Australian:

  • contract research income provided by industry or other  non-government agencies
  • grants for the conduct of research other than  government provided grants
  • donations and bequests for the conduct of research  that have been received from Australian business, Australian non-profit  organisations and Australian individuals
  • income received from syndicated research and  development arrangements
  • funds received for providing the cost of a domestic  student’s HDR fee-paying place (but excluding Commonwealth supported places or  places funded through the RTS). This includes tuition fees that domestic fee  paying students (non Commonwealth supported) pay to their HEP for a HDR program  or HDR-related course of study.

International A:

  • Competitive grants, peer reviewed grants for research  from non-Australian industry or non-Australian Government agencies including  non-Australian industry collaborative research grants.

International B:

  • contract research provided by non-Australian industry  or non-Australian Government agencies including non-Australian industry  collaborative research grants
  • non-competitive grants for research from  non-Australian industry or non-Australian Government agencies including  non-Australian industry collaborative research grants
  • donations and bequests for conduct of research that  have been received from non-Australian business, non-Australian not-for-profit  organisations and non Australian citizens

International C:

  • funds received for providing the cost of an  international student’s HDR fee-paying place (but excluding Commonwealth  supported places). This includes tuition fees that international fee paying  students (non Commonwealth supported) pay to their HEP for a HDR program or  HDR-related course of study.

Applicants should consult the  Research Office site here for further  information on how to submit a grant application.

Applications can be submitted at any time but usually within SIX MONTHS of the grant due date.

Faculty Paper of the Year Award

Applications close on 30 September

The Faculty of Education has established a Faculty Paper of the Year Award for an outstanding paper jointly published by staff members of the Faculty of Education.

The primary purpose of this award is to bring together senior and established researchers with mid-career and early-career researchers and encourage (RHD) Research Higher Degree students to publish with their supervisors.

Papers must meet the following criteria to be considered:

  • Published in an ERA (Excellence in Research for Australia) listed journal;
  • Must be published in the previous calendar year (i.e. Faculty Paper Awards for 2012 will consider papers published in 2011 ONLY);
  • Must have one or more research higher degree student and/or early career researcher AND one or more mid career researcher and/or senior researcher as named authors.

Nominations for the award must also include a justification for the choice of journal.

A limit of TWO papers per school will be considered. It is the decision of each School's Research committee to determine which papers will be nominated. Staff may nominate their papers to their School Research Committees.

Applications should be sent to the Faculty Research and Graduate Studies Office facedrgso@csu.edu.au

Faculty Small Grant Scheme

Next round closing date is 26th October 2012.

The Faculty's aim in providing Small Grants is to provide an opportunity to early career researchers to build a competitive track record. The expectation of staff awarded Faculty of Education Small Grants is that at least one refereed journal article will result and that the staff member will begin to build a track record which will be competitive in seeking further funding from other sources.

There are two funding rounds per year, May and October, with each round being announced in the Faculty Research Bulletin.

Applications to the Small Grant scheme are due to the Faculty Research Office on 25th May and 26th October 2012.

To ensure that Heads of Schools are fully aware of the grant and possible implications for resources with schools, applications for small grants MUST be forwarded to your HOS no later than two weeks prior to the closing date. If applications are received by HoS later than this, they will not be forwarded to the Faculty Research Office. You are also strongly advised to discuss your application with Prof. Frank Marino, Associate Dean (Research), your Head of School, your School Research Chair or mentor.

Application Timeline:

ROUND ONE

  • Due to Head of School - 11th May
  • Due to Faculty Research Office - 25th May

ROUND TWO

  • Due to Head of School - 12th October
  • Due to Faculty Research Office - 26th October

New Staff Establishment Grant

The purpose of the New Staff Establishment Grant is to support new staff to establish and continue their research career at CSU to contribute significantly to the development of the Faculty's research capacity.

To be eligible to apply for funding, applicants must have been awarded a doctorate, be employed within the Faculty of Education on a full time continuing basis, or at least a two-year contract in a 'research only' or 'teaching/research' position. Applications must be made within SIX months of commencing employment at CSU.

The New Staff Start Up fund can be expended in any way the staff member deems appropriate to support establishing their research career within CSU. This can include teaching, administrative or research assistance, travel costs, conference registration and attendance, and contribution to the purchase of necessary materials or equipment.

Final Reports

In all cases of Faculty funding, a Final Report must be submitted at the completion of the project. This final report should outline in detail the outputs and achievements of the research, including any further research related to this project and potential funding applications either to the Faculty or University funding schemes or external organisations.

Information on University and external funding schemes can be found on the University Research Office web site
