The CIO (Collaboration in Information Organisation) research group is based in the School of Information Studies at Charles Sturt University. It was established in May 2007 with seven founding members. The group's aim is to collaborate on research projects that will have a bearing on the practice of information organisation, be it in libraries, other information agencies, or in organisations more generally.
The organisation of information is a field which encompasses bibliographic organisation, as practised by librarians, and related techniques as practised by other information professionals such as archivists, records managers and information architects. It covers the organisation of both physical and online information and knowledge resources. Essentially, information organisation is the study and practice of classifying, describing and representing information and knowledge resources so that the most useful resources in a collection can be readily retrieved by potential users.
The CIO research group is currently in receipt of financial support from the Faculty of Education Research Development Fund. Members of the group are also in receipt of other grants and awards for specific projects.
